My L130 "surges" once i take the choke off.. if i raise the choke to almost the fully closed position, it stops surging. the fuel pump is new. no gas leaks as the gas lines were replaced last year. i will admit to putting on a smaller aftermarket fuel filter. would that starve the engine of fuel? the fuel cap breather has also been checked and is clear. my engine is a briggs...thanks in advance for your help!!

I am sure there will be other suggestions but check the fuel filler cap. There is a hole in the middle of it that gets plugged up. I have fixed 4 different tractors all of them L series with the same problem. I have done some 2-3 times during a season depending on use.
The best way is to carefully remove the inside rubber seal then pop out the plastic baffel, poke a wire or something through the hole. You can clean the insides with your favorite cleaner, I just use a little gas, reassemble and check the hole every fillup.

I had a few fuel problems with my L130 when new and traced the problem to a loose electric connection on the fuel cut off solenoid mounted to the carb. In the process I removed the existing fuel pump and installed a small electric fuel pump wired to the ignition switch. Now I can turn the ignition on pressure up the fuel and the engine starts up instantly with no problems for the last 3 years. No fuel cap venting problems so far but will keep this in mind too. My L130 has the 23hp Kohler engine.

I double checked the fuel cap. all is clean there. the connection at the solenoid valve is clean. when should this valve be "on"? i installed the recommended fuel filter...so far no luck...thanks for all the help so far..

It should be on when the ignition is turned on. With the ignition off the solenoid valve shuts off the fuel to the carb bowl.
