JD MX6 Brush Hog? Should I Go For It?

Any particular brand of 7 twin I might want to keep an eye out for?
Ones that would be acceptable on a 3038E that is.
Never saw a 7 twin spindle (brush cutter). Only 8’
7’ twin grass mower? Yeah sure.

Only one I know of is the Bush Hoq Squealer SQ84T. It is a bit of an unusual unit. It is a fixed offset 3 point mounted two-gearbox 7' twin spindle with the first gearbox directly behind the PTO shaft and then the other gearbox off to the side rather than using three gearboxes (center and two lateral gearboxes) like most twin spindle units use. This means one side of the mower sticks out and the other side does not. That may be great or may be a hindrance depending on your usage. Weight on that is about 700 pounds and it is a light duty unit, so it should work fine with a 3038E in lighter grass.

Do note that a light duty 6' unit is $1500-2000, the Squealer SQ84T is roughly four grand, and a 8' pull type twin spindle is about $8000 or so new. I was looking at the Squealer, 8' and 10' twin spindles when I was looking at getting a cutter, and decided that a single spindle 6'er (the MX6) made more sense for me.

Is there a reason you want a medium duty if you're just cutting grass?

I have to buy heavier stuff because I have some awful bumps and planted rocks, but if I were just cutting smoother fields, I'd be using a lighter-duty cutter.

Good point
or even just buy a 7’ finish mower if there’s a good deal on one?
Id rather cut pasture grass with a sharp twin spindle bush hog just in case I had to cut some rough areas.
I used my medium duty cutter in tall fields all the time.

I've been running an MX6 mower behind a 55hp tractor for over 10 years and I use it more to cut brush than fields. I've hit all kinds of things in the brush with it and have not had a problem. However, the MX6 has/had two different gearboxes. One was made in Spain and the other was made in China. Only one of the mgrs had the shaft breakage problem and I don't remember which one.

In this case, the Chinese gearbox is the better choice. The Spanish ones are what caused issues on earlier mowers.

I had the Spanish made gearboxes on my MX-8 and never had an issue. Pushed it way beyond its limits in brush, too.
Guess I was lucky, but I think it’s a bolt tightening issue.
