JD or Yanmar?

Hypothetical example:

Toyota decides to start selling tractors. They make model 1 for domestic use in Japan and export to a few countries that have similar laws and expectations. They make model 2 for export to North America.

From a quality standpoint, model 1 and model 2 are the same. The differences may be cosmetic, or they may be different to meet market need or NA regulations.

In some cases, the rules for import are different for a manufacturer than for an individual.

A, possibly, more relatable real example. You visit GB and decide you really like a Jaguar with right hand drive. Jaguar doesn't sell or market those in the US, but you could buy one in GB and have it shipped here. Same quality as a left hand drive, just not a "US" model.

Or Toyota Hilux diesel pickup ... I see them with Mexican plates on them, and they are available in Europe too ... But not here in the USA!

Yanmar USA is back and doing very well. There in Ga. Over the Yrs. JD5103, Ym2500 and I still own A 63 Ford 2000 and a Ym2000. known of Yanmar long before most people. Mother knew the kid. She was his bus driver and his mother also! She was at the Infamous Roller over. The YM2000 was my first and it's a all Org. Import. Yanmar usa is local so I get to see all new options. Really Nice!! I'd look that way.

Not my business, but if that was my situation, I'd probably consolidate to one newer Yanmar.

The only reasons I didn't get a Yanmar were dealers proximity and price. They were still a lot cheaper than a similar JD. From my view, a much better machine. The only advantage of the JD is proximity of dealers.
Agree. I absolutely love my Yanmar YT359

Sometimes a gray market tractor may be just as good as one you’d but here sometimes not. It seems like years ago I read where the pto turned the opposite direction for what’s normal in the US.

Reverse Gear Box is kind of normal. A couple ways that's done. Factory and After market. Another gear box to the PTO itself.
The YM2500 has a 4 speed and it was super high. Overdrive for Hwy. speeds.

I was going to buy a Yanmar YT347C if my TYM parts did not show up before winter arrived, I damaged the TYM on a customer mowing job back in late Sept. And it's been sitting for 2 months waiting for parts.........but my TYM dealer only wanted $35k for this one with 220h on it. I was tempted to become a two tractor owner.........VERY nice machine.

I guess I don't understand the term "Grey/Gray" Tractor. Are you saying that you can have one tractor that isn't sold in the USA that is identical to one sold in the USA and the one not sold in the USA is a Grey listed tractor? Or is the Grey term applied to less than standard built tractors?
That's right. The grey market tractor can identical, or nearly so. At their best, they are equivalent tractors - maybe with differences in options - but no difference in build quality. They just started life by being exported to a different country. The big difference is that grey market tractors are almost always used machines when they get to the US. The grey market in tractors, implements, and other machinery exists because of protective import laws on new vs used equipment. It has been that way for decades now.

For some reason, the model numbers are usually different even when otherwise nearly identical tractors are exported to different countries.

"Greys" can range from low hour fairly new tractors all the way to clapped out rebuilt wrecks. Greys coming directly from Japanese farmers are ofen good low hour machines partly because their property taxes on used equipment encourages farmers to trade up often.

OTOH, grey market machines from SE Asia like Viet Nam/Cambodia are more likely to be high hour machines that have been used hard....or not....no way to know. At the cheapest part of the market there, tractor rebuilders there are known to scrap several told tractors to build one they can export.
Hope this helps,
rScotty
