JD Parts - Do you pay list?

fwiw & imho,
That is about the best motto any dealer or salesman could ever adapt. I give my customers the best deals I can... I take it something is going right as they come back again and again. My aim is to be fair. Some call who know what I pay as a volume dealer from the importer. To those folks I suggest they start their own business and they can get "dealer" cost as well. On the other hand I don't try to retire on any one sale. I want repeat business. The above quote is worthy of framing...

Regards, Matt.

Matt, you sound like you come from the old school. It's great to know that some businessmen like you still exist. I too operate on this principle. Give people the bet you can at a fair price and service after the sale and they are customers for life!

... Kind of like the Chinese made MFD Dana Axles under the new 5000s. JD is not the company they once were...

I keep saying this but I guess it still needs repeating. It's not where it's made but how. What are the tolerances? What's the casting process.

Are the Dana axles failing in large numbers or do they fail about the same as other Deere parts? Are the materials they use in those axles inferior?

You can't just say it's made in this or that country so it's no good. A company can use the cheaper labor and still demand an excellent part. Is Deere going down hill? I don't think so and I've been all through their tractors older and newer. A tractor is comprised of attention to design, quality of materials, tolerances, etc. Are Deere's tolerances " not what they once were"? I don't see evidence of that.

Perhaps he is simply speaking in regards to price. I personally haven't seen a reduction in price when JD stated to buy Chinese components for thier tractors.

I did not see a price increase either, However, Mfgrs. may be lucky to keep their basic profit margin by using some import parts where the EPA Regs., High Union labor costs and ever increasing Healthcare costs are not a big factor in final input component costs like in the US. Ken Sweet

Cat said right after the Heth Care Reform bill passed that it was going to add about a gazillion dollars (a huge amount anyway, I can't remember the exact figure) to their overhead costs. It will affect almost all American manufacturers to a great extent.

Yah.. Deere announced that it was planning a $100 million "write down" for expenses related to the health care reform act.

Cat announced a similar tax plan as well.

If you're really feeling sorry for Deere and company grab a copy of the June 4th issue of CapitalPress - or go online Capital Press agriculture news

Deere has petitioned the government for protection against imports of it's own produced forage harvesters in Europe.

Seems that the European version of the same forage harvester costs $60,000 less than the American counterpart. Independent dealers are bringing the European model into the U.S for sale. Deere is WHINING to anyone who will hear their pleas for "market relief"!!!

The number of machines amounts to 3% of all the harvesters sold and manufacturered by Deere. The International Trade Commission stated that 57% of the marketed European model were sold in the U.S. by John Deere dealerships that in the words of the Deere corporate spokesperson were "creating confusion in the marketplace and harming the companies brand".

Anyone want to contribute for a "pity party"....???

I didn't think Deere made forage harvesters, self propelled anyway, in the US, I thought they where all made in Germany.

There was no specific mention made of "who" actually builds the machines for Deere...

The article referred to the U.S and European equipment "markets" for forage harvesters and Deere's efforts to "wring" every last dime outta the U.S. consumer - basically.

Deere's own dealers are selling the European machine here in the U.S. for less and "mother" Deere is pissed at losing the margins on 3% of the harvesters built. As well, they should be concerned that U.S. farmers are getting a good look at what Deere has under their "bloomers", too!!

I have written several responses to this topic....but each of them has ended up getting political. So......I have thrown them all away in order to comply with the wishes of the forum.

Still....I can't help but say that the few remaining independent businessmen that have survived these tumultuous times deserve to make a reasonable margin and a fair profit. I'd hate to see our tractor dealers go the way of Mart Mart (like so many other areas in biz have). Who's gonna figure out our service problems then....a Mart Mart employee????? Good luck with that!!!

We are dangerously close now.

fwiw & imho,
An actual farmer with $100Ks of green on the farm should not have to pay the same at the parts counter as a guy getting new blades for his lawn mower...

Why do you think this? The dealer pays the same for the parts whether he sells them to the big spender or the little spender.

Like tips for service, discounts should be appreciated and not expected.
