Tractor
john deere 3020, 2520, X758
have a X758 with 30 hours on it, 10 or less hours mowing with 60" deck. Tractor is very quite when running w/o any attachments running, some noise when tilling but easily masked with ear muffs, mowing - greased well before first use and once since, initially could mow w/o muffs but used anyway, now it's annoying with muffs on. I made sure all debris was cleaned from deck before mowing this last time. Can't tell where noise is coming from while sitting on the seat, may look for a volunteer. Dealer mentioned possibly the gearbox but all appears good.

Any thoughts out there before I dig in deeper?

otherwise really like the tractor, added the 3 point, mid-pto etc.

thanks

Everything gets looser with age and mowers get noisier. We ALWAYS wear ear protection during mowing.

KInda like when I drove my old car, you never want to hear all those "funny" noises, so I always just turned the radio up loud.

I have the x744, dad has the x749, and the neighbor has the x700, they all have the loud whistle/whine noise when mowing.

Be sure that your deck gear box case is full of the proper gear oil. I changed mine to Amsoil severe gear 75w-90 at 128 hours, and then again at 130 hours. I removed the side level and fill plug, inserted a suction hose. Pulled out the factory oil, and the replaced it with the Amsoil. I did this twice to ensure a good fluid change. The box doesn't take much oil so it was not an expensive up grade. I already had a jug of the sever gear oil. I'm going to do it again soon at around 300 hours. My deck does not make the noise that I have read described here. I can actually hear through my ear plugs and ear muff noise protection the grass actually getting cut by the blades. I also have both my belt guards removed so that I can blow off the entire deck with my electric leaf blower. I do this several times when mowing. As well as pulling the engine screen, and blowing off the entire machine about every hour. I wanted the deck belt to run as cool as possible. I also have removed the side discharge chute so that the cut grass is discharged more evenly instead of being placed into also as I would describe as a row. This also increases the velocity of the dischared grass due to the restriction being remove. The underside of the deck remains amazingly clean without any slip plate. Big fan of synthetic oil. I have always found that equipment runs cooler. To each his own. The loud whistle/whine could be the 90 degree power transmission redirection to the deck belt through the gear box case. Gears will whine when spun up to high rpms. I just love my X750, 60HC mower. Just did the full service on it. What a mowing machine, and it just sips off road diesel. Man O man will that machine cut some grass fast, and turns on a dime. I'd rather cut grass with it that go to the Dominican Republic for vacation!

Have you checked the bottom of your deck for grass build up. Lots of grass build up under the deck will make more noise.

Thanks for the responses. Went through the deck again, all cleaned / greased / gearbox oil good. Last night was tilling garden, between removing the tiller and connecting to the mower deck I turned the PTO on and heard noise under the tractor. Thinking it was possibly the auto-connect I had the Mrs. occupy the seat and running the PTO switch while I checked underneath and it appears the noise is coming from the PTO gearbox assembly. Quite sure when I first got the mower I flipped the PTO on and could not hear it, last night it was noisy in all three positions rear PTO, Mid PTO and both. When I connected the deck, cranked up the rpm's and flipped the PTO that same noise from the PTO became louder as it transferred through the 60" deck. Has anyone had this issue? Are your PTO's noisy with nothing connected to your X7xx series tractors? PTO's on the 2520 and 3020 are quiet.

It sounds like you've isolated the problem, now is the tractor still under warranty? If it is, get it in and get the problem checked out before the warranty expires. If not under warranty it is time to get the TM for the tractor and the transmission from JD

I found another poster with the same problem in 2013. https://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/john-deere-lawn-garden/282256-new-x758-problems-already.html I know that JD likes to cut corners using cheap imported parts. the tractor I have needed the plastic needle valves replaced with stainless steel, the idler pulleys for the mower belt rusted, and had to be replaced, they use fully sealed, as opposed to the original, shielded bearings, and some used friction bearings for the front wheels, instead of fully shielded ball bearings, and the paint is coming off in some areas because of improper prepping for paint. this is all I can think of for now, I think your problem is the Idler pulleys for the belt..

The JD la145 might be "cheap", but the JD X758 is not.. just sayin....

just because something is expensive, don't mean JD won't cut corners to make the price a little more competitive!. they DID fill the more expensive equipment with custom made, only available from JD modules!..

Another reason I upgraded to the 7 iron deck back in 2011.

Just pulled a spindle on the wife's x744 with the 62c deck. The bearings top to bottom were well lubed and the bearings did not have seals. Outboard of each bearing there was a separate seal that rode on a spacer between bearing and pulley (top). I normally give each spindle 5 pumps every 3rd time mowing. I don't have excess grease outside of the seal but it is well lubed.

Hello all - took the tractor back to dealer without the deck on since it was noisy w/o it, spent a week there took the PTO all apart and couldn't find anything wrong and submitted a ticket to JD. After 3-4 days JD came back with some will do that, I was shocked at the response from JD. Techs said they fired up the new ones on the lot and some made the same noise. Mowing last night and almost to the point where I have to earplugs in and then the ear muffs. Very disappointed for the money spent, have a 62D for my 2520 and when mowing with that it just purrs. Up to 50 hours on the machine and just did all the maintenance, won't be long before it goes back.

does anyone have issues with noise coming from their auto-connect? Much noisier when the deck is on. Deck itself seems ok, grease spindles and scalp wheels every other mowing which is every 4-5 hrs per or 8 - 10 between lubes. The machine is awesome but the noise is a PITA.

asked the Tech's what's the next step, said I should call the 800 number on my manual, will that going as well.

thanks all
