I go up and down some hills and others I go back and forth laterally using forward and reverse. 

you should only go up and down on hills. 

back and forth laterally is more dangerous for roll overs.

 I stopped and looked at a MF 2310 last winter about 30 miles up the Ohio River from me. 
 Just to look at it appeared smaller than my BX23 and the front tires looked slightly smaller. The lugs on the A/G tires didn't look as beefy as those on my BX23. 
I didn't find these as faults of the MF just differences. 
 I'm impressed with the 2310 - a fine little tractor.

I purchased a JD 221o in June 04. I had the tractor for four days when I started having problems with the mower deck not raising and lowering the way it should. The mower deck belt the broke on the second day of ownership, at this point it had only about 1 acre of mowing on the machine. I did have the chance to move about 10 ton of fill dirt with the loader. Needless to say I was not satisfied and the dealer was not very cooperative (they would not pick up the tractor at no cost and repair it, they wanted $200.00 to pick up the tractor-60 mile away). I took the tractor to them and got my check back. In January of this year I purchased a Bx2230. Here are the differences.
The loader is stronger and bigger on the 2210. However, I do not like the system that they have rigged up to raise and lower the mower deck. I did not like the bar that has to be on the 3PH arms to kkep them seperated to raise and lower the mower. It is a pain in the neck trying to pull a trailer or roller that has a ball or tongue hitch with the mower deck on the tractor. The mower on the BX is far superior to the 2210. Its linkage is not in the way, it is built of a heavier gauge of steel and the belt is much stronger. I also believe that it cuts better. It is easy to adjust height. On the 2210 if your linkage for raising and lowering the mower needs adjusted and you accidently adjust it too much it will bend the linkage when you raise the 3PH.
The fuel tank on the 2210 is in a poor spot. It is very difficult to fill this holding a 5 gal. can in air while leaning over the tractor. On the BX it is on the right rear fender and is much easier to fill.
I though the pedal design of the Bx (rocking pedal ) would be a down fall but I have gotten used to it and it is not uncomfortable. They are equal in this area except the Kubota Bx has cruise control.
The 2210 sits higher off of the ground than the BX. However this is not an issue for me.
All in all the Bx is a better tractor if its main use will be mowing. The 2210 is better for loader use. I have had some problems with the BX. However, for the money, I believe it is the better tractor. I wish I would have looked closer at Massey Ferguson Sub Compact as their 3PH is standard size ann my impliments from my other tractor would fit. But they were even priced higher than JD in my area. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

My BX2230 will be delivered this week. After reading this thread I concluded the BX2230 is a more capable mowing tractor. My FEL requirements are minimal so the better FEL capabilites of the 2210 did not weigh significantly in my decision.

I am getting the 54" mowing deck which is made from a lighter gauge of steel than the 60". I hope I will not regret that decision. My grass clipping pile is in the woods and the 60" mowing deck with the extra 13" added to the width for the grass collection system prevented me from fitting through the tight spots.
