JD4300 -- Catastrophic Failure of the Shift Shaft

Not that I know of that would effect the range lever.

Keep the shaft lubed where it goes into the case.

And most importantly, use finesse when changing ranges. Don't force it. And when you loan it to your father in law, make sure he understands this.;)

And to reiterate...STOP when changing ranges.

You folks with reversers...you can shift the gears (on the fly), but you cannot shift ranges (which applies to both reversers and hydros).

Any guesses why my range shifter carries low gear in A and B , yet C is locked up and jammed. Stalls tractor. All other hyd. work fine. when tractor split to replace shaft all trany appeared fine.\

thx brad

:welcome: to the forum.
No guesses right off. What can you tell us that led up to this?
What shaft was tractor split to replace?

I have '02 w 900 hrs and all has been good and hydrostat. Driving on road reving up in high range then tractor locked up and stopped as if my foot fell off fwd foot pedal, but foot still to the floor.
I assume that the tractor would have stalled if i had not lifted my foot. Or that was action following my attempt to drive off the road. I think range shifter was stiff to get to low range which drove fine off the road. Only low range would operate fine.
After my investigating I noticed coincidently the range shifter shaft broke off at the housing just like the thread I read. My mechanic split tractor to replace new shaft and all trany looked and seemed to be fine in movement and oil not burnt. ( at incident the hyd fluid level was below the sight glass and added 8 L to bring up) All other actions worked perfect on tractor bucket....
After shifter replaced and all ranges shift smoothly by feel, I ran tractor but only low range drove properly. mid range position was actually in low speed and high range just stalled engine when drive actuated. Must be in two gears or what? Mechanic is going to remove plate and have a look / see to troubleshoot.
Anyones opinion would help

thanks brad

I just replaced another 4300 shifter shaft a few weeks ago. It now shifts
easily if the teeth are aligned and not under any load. I had to buy
a new linkage arm, too, which had to be adjusted to the correct
throw, or it would not go into Low range.

Did your mechanic mess with the linkage at all? There is a solid
stop to keep the shifter arm from going too far.

Not that he mentioned. just re assembly req'd and presto it does not work.
I believe the trany locked up firstly and the broken shaft was result of me troubleshooting with a nearly failed stub (cracking signs were long term on both sides of shaft. Mechanic said he would remove the cover or mower shaft area to look in (2x2 hole)
Needed a seal on mower shaft also needed on front wheel hub. Is it easy to replace seal on front wheel?
sounds like my mechy should be talking to you guys.

where do you find exploded assy dwgs for these trany parts? the one I found is not to useful.

thx brad

Welcome to TBN Brad.

Is the mechanic a Deere trained one with the shop manual handy, or an independent who wings it?

...mid range position was actually in low speed and high range just stalled engine when drive actuated. Must be in two gears or what?

This is what makes me think the shifter linkage is way out of adjustment.
Also, I suppose you could put the bellcrank on the shaft backwards. If
the shifter tries to push the collar too far on the shaft internally, it is
hard to imagine how that locks up the gearbox, however. And I have
had every gear, shaft, and bearing out of there. I tested that
everything worked properly before I buttoned up all the hatches and
filled with oil.

Since you have the mid-PTO, I suppose you (your mechanic) can see
a little bit inside, but not much.

he is veteran trained diesel mech but not deere trained.
I dont see how the rnage linkage could be bent or out of adjustment.
