JD 5425
The JD5425 was originally sold from the factory in George, so it does not have a preheat device for cold weather. So I got the air intake heater kit from JD and tried to install it. I got as far as installing the heater unit on the air intake manifold. I was going to wait for another day to hook up the wiring because I needed to use the tractor. However it will not start now. It turns over just fine, lights, etc work fine. The only thing I can think of is that some fine pieces of the old gasket may have fallen into in the intake manifold and got caught in a vale seat making it impossible for pressure to rise to combustion. However I can't image that happening on our four sets of vales. Anyway I blew compressed air into the air intake thinking I might dislodge the dirt, but that didn't help.
I put the old spacer device back into its original position, but still nothing. So I ran out of ideas.
Any suggestions or possibilities. May have to call for JD service on Monday
Thanks,
Craig

Did you check and see if all the fuses are good? If you are blowing a fuse does it blow as soon as you turn the key?

No, I didn't think I was messing with the electrical. Anyway I will check out the fuse in the morning.
Thanks for the tip.

I agree with the other posters in that I think your tractor isn't getting fuel. I doubt that a small piece of gasket under a valve would stop engine from starting.

HI
I just went out to check the fuse and its fine. The starter turns over fine. But when I took out the fuse it did NOT turn over so that connection seems to be ok.

Hi Friends,
The temps when the tractor was last started was just above freezing. Yesterday it was about 30 degrees and this AM about 20.

Hi Friends,
Is there a fuse that controls the fuel flow that could be blown?

Did you check all the fuses? When it is attempting to start is it blowing smoke?

I didn't check all the fuses, most seem to be for lights, etc which are all working. Not sure about blowing smoke, I will have to check. I do smell diesel fumes after trying to start it.

Does your tractor have this option? AIR INTAKE HEATER (OPTIONAL)

No. I was attempting to install it on the tractor when the no starting problem occurred. It was starting fine before I took apart the manifold to insert the air intake heater.

Hi Guys,
The 5425 starts and runs fine now. I just charged the battery for a little while and it started right up. We did get a lot of dark smoke at start up, but then it cleared right up. I noticed that the instrument panel lights, hrs, etc are no longer working. I will have to check the fuses I guess.
Thanks for your suggestions, etc.
