Thanks Steve. I'll try the Power Service, have Tractor Supply & a Walmart nearby You said gray bottle, assume thats the Diesel Kleen & Cetane Boost (spring,summer,fall more or less). What does the @ 200% refer to? Thanks again.

Its really satisfying to just add something that actually works (PS) and it doesn't cost much another plus. Steve

I have a diesel storage tank that I add Power Service to when I fill. I've been doing this for years. Maybe that's why my X748 never seemed to knock since new.

I'm not sure why PS would prevent the knock though. Could it just be cetane increase.

I have an X744 and can compare it to an X749 I bought at work. The 24 HP Yanmar in both the 744 and the 749 both sound the same, sort of middle of the field regarding noise and vibration compared to other diesels. But all diesel equipment sound different, many times even different equipment using the same powerplant. Definitely the best advice is to compare it to another identicle tractor, not just one using the same motor.

Welcome aboard and sorry for the bad experience with your X744.
I can say my 2305 is a lot louder that my son in laws . Might be the muffler, engine , I don't know. Both of the 2305 I've had was louder than his. Just run it, it's under warranty if something breaks, dealer will have to repair. Sounds like dealer didn't find anything. I also agree with others don't let a non JD dealer work on engine...
Try Power Service and buy some muffs with radio for your ears. wear them and enjoy the power this engine has to offer compared to a gas engine.. I've worn radio muffs since my first 425. Save your hearing and enjoy .

Welcome Gary, yes that's the bottle I am using its for summer use and it boosts cetane up to 6 or 8% dont remember but its more cetane booster than white bottle winter formula.

The 200% is about 1 oz per gallon of fuel I think? I dont have a bottle here so cant quote it 100% correctly, just add double the max dose is what I am doing and as stingy on fuel as these Yanmars are it isnt costing us much on additives. hth

Picked some up on the way home last Friday & realized you meant dbl the ratio after reading the instructions. I'll try it this week & forward the results. Thanks all.

I have an x749 with the 24hp yanmar diesel and it is quieter than my 26hp briggs and straton engine. Mine does not rattle when you run a full or nearly full throttle, which is the way you should run a diesel. If you let it idle it will rattle. This is the compression noise found on all diesels. Idleing big diesels don't seem to hurt them,but the small diesels in lawn tractors should not be idled for very long according to the manuals. They say it could damage the engine.

Gary;
Picked up a bottle of the " Power Service supplement additive " a while back. I'm not a believer in snake oil or the sales people. I have to say after three tankfuls I can't believe the difference. The sharp crackle sound has disappeared and now sounds like my old machine. It has truely made a difference to the positive side.
I had just completed mowing the last four of six acres and was opening the garage door. Without ear plugs I thought something was wrong with the engine it sounded so different. Needless to say I'm a believer and a customer for this product. This probably has something to do with the removal of sulfer in diesel fuel this product replaces.

I have a JD 2720 which was upset on its side, no damage except that the engine cylinders must have filled with fuel because when it was uprighted, it wouldn't turn over. I left it for a day and then it started but ran awful, HUGE blue smoke, rough, noisy. I ran it a few times for an hour or so and it smoothed out a bit but still blur smoke big time when it started and seems to have a "rattle" (lifter?valve?) that it didnt have before . JD serviced it , advanced the timing of the fuel pump, they said. I wasn't satisfied, they did it again and pronounced the tractor to be "normal" for a 2720. I neglected to tell them about the upset incident ( no visible damage, didnt want to void wrrty).
In any case, it still smokes too much and for too long (in my opinion) when started cold, and it still has this rattle which was not present before. It's more noticeable to me at higher rpm than at idle. No smoke when it starts warm, just the rattle (which JD svc says is normal). However, I am certain it is a result of the upset, anybody got any ideas?
