Would anybody happen to have the specs and years produced
for the JD770 compact 4x4? I've happened upon one for sale and would like to know more about it.
Thanks DMB.

24 Engine HP, 20 HP at the PTO.
Manufactured from 1989 to 1997 or 1998.
It's the immediate predessor to Deere's current 790.

One thing you want to check on is if it has a dual stage clutch (press ½ to disengage the PTO, all the way down for the drivetrain transmission) and that it is in good working condition. It's pretty expensive to repair/replace.
But even if it has a single stage clutch, that's been no real hindrance to any of the work I do (mowing, brush cutting, pushing snow and a modicum of loader work)

The 770 is a very robust little tractor. I have it's little bretheren, the 670 (smaller engine and less HP), and have found this to be a real worker. If it has a loader, it should be the #70 model.

Parts are readily available through your local Deere store.

DMB:

I have a 1998 JD 770 along with the owners manual for the tractor and the 70 loader. If you need any #'s let me know.

I've only had it about 10 months, but so far, it's been absolutely trouble free. I bought it with 239 hrs, and it now has about 283, so I have not put that many hours on it. It has plenty of Power and even with 4 X 4 it still runs out of traction before power. I run an LX-4 rotary cutter and it handles it without any problems. The previous owner ran a 5' King Kutter rotary hog which he said it handled well.

The contractor that built my house has a 1993 or 1994 770 which he has nearly 1,000 hrs on it. It sits outside all the time, and he has an FEL plus a back hoe. It's been trouble free basically for him as well. He's had his since it was new.

Incidently, this 2,150 lb tractor with water filled tires, a FEL and a 450 # rotary cutter plus the operator tips the scales at around 3,700+#'s. Castngs, frame, etc are substantial.

If you need any info let me know.

FYI - Deere lists the rear 3-point hitch capacity at 815-lbs. at 24-inches behind the pins. I've seen 790s do about 15% more than that with proper ballasting (loader).
A good, basic tractor.
P.S. Direct-injected Deere's (Yanmar's) sound great.

I forgot to mention that while JD Literature shows fuel consumption of a gallon per hour at 75% (mowing), when running the LX-4, I burn a little over half of that at 2,600 rpm (rated). I've mowed 5 acres of brush, some of which were a foot over the top of the stack and included some old voluntary hay, fenel, wild mustard and various other weeds.

It's just a very inexpensive tractor to operate.

The 83 cu. in. engine is rated at 25.5 Gross HP, 24 net and 20 at the PTO as previously mentioned. The 790's initially had 30 gross hp, but I understand it's been reduced somewhat.

The 70 loader has a 755 lb lift capacity at it's maximum 77" lift height (high enough to fill a 2-3 yard dump truck on an F 450), and 1,010 lbs at 36" lift. The 54" bucket holds 7 cu ft.
At 5' 10", I've found the tractor comfortable, with the loader control lever nicely at hand.

The road speed in 8th is 10.8 MPH, which is plenty fast enough.

Thanks to all that responded. Some good info from all. The 24 hp and 20 on the PTO sounds good. I didn't know before that it was a direct injection type. Is this common on Yanmar?
Thanks again. I'm going to look into this one further.

From the literature I have, the 670 and 755 were indirect injection.

The 770, (now the 790) 855, 870, 955, 970 (now the 990) and the 1070 were direct injection.
As I understand it, direct injection engines are a little more efficient and tend to be a little noiser.

Yep direct injection is very common on all the JD comapcts. All the new 4210-4710s have it, and the 790 and 990. Also I know the 870, 970, and 1070 have it too. Not sure about the 670.

"Not sure about the 670. "

According to the Owner's Manual (1991), the 670 has indirect injection.

Ah, I forgot you owned one of those! Nevertheless, It's still a good motor as all Yanmar motors are.
