JD855 over heating

Aside from normal things (fluid levels)... what could it be? I am about to check the transmission air cooler behind grill. I saw the issue resolved on a 755. I don't even know if it is same position on 855.

How about some better history of your JD 855. Not much to go on so far.

Going through that now with my 855 purchased in April. I've only used it occasionally up to now but have 10 acres to cut down that hasn't been touched in a year so that will be a chore. I cut for a few hours recently with the deck fully raised until the idiot "hot" light came on. I immediately shut it down and let it cool. Upon investigation, I discovered a small crack at the top of the radiator that wasn't there before. Once I dug deeper, I learned why. There is a simple screen you pull out from in front of the radiator - you don't even need any tools. Just lift up the screen from in front of the radiator. That screen was completely plugged so no air was getting through. As a result, it boiled off the coolant and cracked the radiator. I hope that was all that was damaged.

Now learning how impossible it is to source a replacement radiator (without forking out $1300 to JD), I am hoping what I have can be repaired.

A decent radiator shop should be able to patch/solder a "crack". They'll also want to boil/clean it out. I found that screen right away on mine, and keep it clean. These X55 series JD's are great. Welcome to TBN.

Thanks. Since it was on the top, I tried the JB Weld to patch it - not really expecting good results. It actually worked but I missed a thin vein down the backside so worse case is I finish that patch. But, being 39 years old with an unknown history, but I'd prefer the professional treatment though with a pressure test. I am guessing I'll need to take a drive. It's at least an hour each way to the nearest radiator shop. I miss the days when they were in every town.
