My pop figured out we could replace it with a GM hei distributor by swapping the drive gear on the bottom.... seems they turned in reverse.

Yes, thats one of the best mods to be done. HEI distributor and TBI conversion.

Wish I still had my MB too. I didn't make a profit. It needed a new motor and the kids need feeding ... I'm still debating my choice in retrospect
I got a LOT of use out of it with a 5' box blade on my first property. I blocked the rear axle and ran the tires a bit low with chains at all corners. The only brakes it had was the tranny brake.

Yes, I understood the OEM elec ign was junk on the vintage you're talking about. As Joe pointed out, the points worked good but I guess all were greatly improved w/ HEI.

I drove a 1972 Jeep Commando with the AMC 304 2-barrel three speed for 25 years, sorry I sold to a good buddy in my hunt club back in the '90's.

When I sold it to him, I was on my 4th Timing Chain (all broke without hurting the engine) @ 435,000 miles with zero work on the engine internals!!!

UNREAL milage!!! Pretty darn good testament to the engine ... and maintenance. Though, if divided equally, that seems like pretty short chain life.

I forgot about those seats!!! The factory low back bucket seats on them might just be the worse seat ever put in a vehicle.

I replaced mine with a pair of captains chairs out of a van. It was probably the best upgrade I made!!!!

He continually amazes me with the sweeties he's managed to bring home in that thing. That gravel drive in my backyard is about as offroad as that Jeep has ever been. I've been looking for the right CJ-7 for about a year now to replace my loss

Of all the stuff I did in Jeeps, as a kid with my parents in the old Ford/Willy's MB, to the '70 CJ5 that used to be my Dad's(that I wound up with), the most fun was out on the rocks.
