I was at my neighbors this afternoon and we were discussing moles and how my wife had killed one. His yard is full of hills and he had a scissors trap sitting out of the ground. I was on the Kubota moving gravel and making all kinds of noise at the time. As I was filling a pothole he motioned to me and said he saw the grass moving. He took the rake he had in his hand and started stabbing the ground with the handle like a madman. The next thing you know he pulled a mole up out of the ground and threw it under the tractor tire for me to run over lmao, true story. He was so happy he decided to celebrate with a beer.

Hey, get 'em any way you can. We don't have any now, but a couple of years ago we had one, but our outside kitty snagged him out.

Love the photo! That stance seems to say, "I'll do it again any time I want to."

Proven once again: A woman doesn't need a gun to get even, just a reason. ;)

Congrats, Jena & Kevin!!

Congrats to Jena! I like the scissor traps...they work well. Trick is to dig down far enough and get down to the tunnel......between the tunnel holes build up a mound of dirt.....place the trap carefully over that mound......cover the hole with loose dirt.....the trap should be down far enough that it is almost flush with the ground. You will get the mole......I have gotten dozens of them. We also have a dog who loves moles......problem is......when he sees movement he pounces on them and digs a bigger hole in about 30 seconds. He has caught several but ruined the yard.

Don't mess with a woman's yard. A month ago my wife was mowing and she forced a mole out of the ground when she ran over a tunnel. I heard the mower die as she jumped off the seat. I turned and saw her grab a 5" log off the firewood rack and proceed to pound the ground a dozen times with it. I walked over to see a pulverized mole dead on the lawn. She was standing there with the same smirk as Jena on her face holding that log ready to strike again. :)

First off, congrats on the stalking of the mole. I've killed well over 300 in our yard, but only one was by stalking. The rest were by trapping.

Second... moles don't kill plants. They don't eat plants. They eat meat. Worm meat. Bug meat. Slug meat. But never plants.

You'd never see plant damage above ground from moles because they don't eat plants, and you'd never see root damage from moles because they don't eat plants.

If you're seeing above ground plant damage, its not from a mole. If you're seeing root damage in mole tunnels, its from some other animal using the mole tunnel to get to the roots... most likely Voles. If you see mole tunnels with holes in them, usually about the size of a nickel, its most likely Voles. Voles eat plant roots, like onions, carrots, potatoes, flower bulbs, etc...

Moles are actually good for gardens as they aerate the soil and allow air and water to penetrate the soil better.

But they can cause damage to lawns (and that's O.K. if you don't want a show lawn), and they can undermine sidewalks, driveways, swimming pools (that's why I had to start killing them, they popped our above ground pool), and make paths for water to get next to your house foundation.

The best trap I have found by far, is the Victor Out O Sight mole trap. It can be set at any depth, in any soil conditions, and it kills the moles fairly quickly, so its the most humane one I've tried. I tried Nash choker loop traps, but the are not fast, and therefore, inhumane. I've tried the plunger type traps with spikes, but I've never seen a dead body, so, again, I think the animal has to crawl off and die, and therefore, its not humane.

Anyhow, there's lots of good reading at this guy's site, Mole control, biology and trapping help, 1986, professional, author, tom schmidt | The Mole Man. He's a professional mole trapper. I learned what I know from his pages.

The animal she killed was a mole and it did tunnel all around and under her flowers and vegetables. The dog has killed several moles in the yard but he can't get in gardens for obvious reasons. We have voles too and from what I've read they will use the tunnels that moles make and eat roots etc. The shear number of tunnels in the vegetable garden seem to disrupt the roots of the plants while the moles hunt for grubs/worms though.

We have 4 victor out o'sight traps but haven't got a mole with one yet. We may not be setting them correctly I guess but I think the problem we're having is finding the main runs rather than the hunting offshoots. So we end up setting the traps and the mole is finished with that tunnel before we get him.

I have the spiked type Victor traps from the 1970 years. They are the most efficient design versus the later Victor spike models....which some bean counter must have "improved". Maybe the company was bought out? Anyway with twelve traps set from last summer till this spring, I killed 37 moles. It was a daily chore to "run the traps", but it was worth it; because there are no moles so far this year. In over 40 years here, I've probably killed as many as MossRoad.

Undoubtedly they will gradually return, whence I'll get after them again. Cheers, to you Kevin and your "Garden Girl" Jena.
