I know some people get themselves in trouble with their credit but do these people really need a 60" TV or a monster stereo?

YOu have no idea how many low income homes I go to on jobsites where the people have no furniture, the beds are just matteresses that lay on the floor and the fridge is from the 1940's yet they have a huge TV and Stereo with speakers that go from the floor to the ceiling. Yet their car sits on cinder blocks as it died shortly after leaving the buy here pay here place:rolleyes: .

Life is a series of choices with results perturbed by chance. It is frequently legal to make poor choices.

As a youngster when we traveled on vacations from Ohio to South Carolina via Tennessee and Kentucky seeing the Great Smokey Mountains and the Cumberland gap and such along the way I recall my mother's comments about shanty after shanty in view of the highway with big TV antennas.

Living in squalor but with selected certain accoutrements of higher class living is not a new phenomenon as these observations were from the early 1950's.

I don't think this an uncommon practice. Bought my daughter a new style Malibu with 30k on the odometer. It has a 2.2 four cylinder with a cartridge style oil filter. These filters are pricy and hidden inside a black container. I changed the fluids a couple times and she had it done where she works. I pencil marked the cover and put a dab of fresh grease on the opposite side of the raised portion of the filter cover just in case they failed to remove the filter for the oil change. Guess what ? Three changes later my marks are still there. Just because you don't see it doesn't mean it doesn't have to be changed. This was in a big name service center. Sometimes the employees they hire aren't the most motivated creatures either. She is not going back. She now goes to a mom and pop operation. First thing the owner said is " bet they didn't change the filter ". So to some it was common knowledge.

Another instance, a guy I know took his new Ford F-150 to an oil change site while on vacation. Sign said $29.95 oil changes. His bill was $69.95. They said trucks are always higher.

That is one of the reasons I have little trust for anyone I don't know to work on my vehicles. it will usually end up in bad feelings.
I have a Dodge Ram 1500, oil capacity is 6 qts. I also have an 05 Ford Taurus, oil capacity 4.5 qts. I get each vehicle serviced by the respective dealerships. Oil change, including filters, at the Dodge dealership is $21.95, oil change at the Ford dealership is $26.95. Go figure.

dgl, Ford has a reputation for pouring oil in with a flair, great panache, and deep feelings of lubricity so much better of an attitude than the pedestrian feelings evoked by Dodge's performance.

How much you reckon the guys at the Ford garage will charge to change the 15 qts of oil and the mongo big oil filter in my 7.3 PS truck?

I was always raised to have my priorities straight. A small TV with comfy furniture is better then a big screen TV where you have to sit on the floor (yes, people do live this way). Around here the Rent to Own places thrive while the people struggle but it is their money. I just don't like them putting their money into their TV's and Stereos while their kids have nothing.
Robert, I think your tag line says it all. If these folks spent a bit more time trying to improve their circumstances (PT job, additional education) instead of laying about watching TV the US would be in much better shape.

They're still around - 'cept now they have satellite dishes instead of antennae.

Robert, Consider the positive potential of no furniture & a 60" TV, maybe some of those kids watch tv and realize the world is bigger than the hole they live in rather than sit on a comfy couch until they die in that hole. A huge segment of our population dies having never left town in body or spirit. Comfort kills dreams. MikeD74T

I would like to think that but sadly from my experience, most people grow up and live similar to the way they were raised. They generally think that is the way people live. But I do know some grow up to better themselves but they are the minority.

the only reason I would go to any place but my own garage is if it was a major repair. then i would find the reputable mom and pops place.

I was forced to use a shop due to appt rules. now that i own. I plan to repair just about every thing. I also need to find out if my master break was ever changed. place refused to allow the car to be released till it was replaced. the breaks felt the same before and after. meh we shal see...

I stopped changing my own because I never seem to have the time...
I used a different JL a few times last year because of where I was working, until my normal JL told me that the other JL was using the wrong oil in my honda.
I was glad he looked back thru my history and noticed.
