Re: Jim\'s new projects

Here's a shot of the PT with the second 25 tons of stone. Whatever I don't use on the porch and raising the driveway, I will spread in the RV parking area.

Re: Jim\'s new projects

I didn't realize how reasonable a large dumpster would be for throwing away all sorts of junk. The PT was great for carrying the old hot water heater with the pallet forks, poles and barbed waire with the 4 in 1 bucket. I could just get the bucket high enough to release the stuff in to the top.

$225.00 for three weeks! Great deal! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Re: Jim\'s new projects

I don't know what kind of experience you guys have with 2A Mondified stone, but I am going to use the 4 in 1 to lay the stone and try to pack it somewhat.

I'll report back later.

Re: Jim\'s new projects

Today I used the big bucket to dump the gravel in the porch area and then used it to tamp down most of it flat. It was a little rough getting over some of the spikes for the concrete frame, but the articulated 425 allowed me to swing the bucket just about where ever I needed it to go.

Then I did another pass with a powered tamper. Man, I wonder if there are hydraulically powered tampers that could attach to the PT? I guess the only people who would be interested in that would be someone who does it for a living and they probably would use a roller.

Pic is of the front porch with the gravel in place. I have one more tamping pass to make to smooth everything out and then I will be ready to pour concrete Monday morning.

I wonder if there are hydraulically powered tampers that could attach to the PT?

I have seen hydraulic plate units made for bobcats, but they are pricey and the bobcats put out way more GPM on their hydraulics than my PT425. Some of the plate units were 36" wide!

When we were down in Cade's Cove a few weeks ago, they were doing work around the gift shop near the mill. There was a bobcat with a vibrating roller attachment. It looked to be 48" wide. They were using it to pack down crushed rock similar to what you are doing.

The hardware/lawn mower repair shop in our neighborhood had one of those plate compactor units like the one sitting in your garage pictures in his repair shop for months. I finally asked if he'd like to sell it. He said the engine was blown and the owner hadn't paid the $20.00 dollar diagnostic bill. I told him I'd give him $50.00 for it. He said he'd call the owner(he was required to do so by law) and call me back. The owner paid his bill and took it back. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

My plan was to install a hydraulic motor in place of the blown gas engine and slap a quick attach plate on it. That would have been nice to have on occasion. The PT could put it just about anywhere and the articulation could swing it side to side, too. The unit had a 6HP engine on it, and I think the PTs 8GPM @2500psi puts out a little more than that to the main PTO circuit. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

If you're feeling handy, keep an eye on equipment rental places or small engine repair shops and put in a word there that you are interested in a plate compactor if they come across one with a blown engine. Also check out auctions and police department sales of recovered stolen items. We have a few of those a year and they have all kinds of good stuff for cheap. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Jim\'s new projects

Good thoughts MR. We have quite a lot of gravel driveway and I am not sure if I will ever pave it. With the PA farmhouse look of our property, somehow the paved drive just doesn't seem to fit. You're right; the unit that I am renting would be nice to modify and put on the front of the 425. It lifts it easy, (I already moved it around with the PT).

Man, you b' a genius! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Jim\'s new projects

I have one of those plate compactors with a Honda engine. I use it both ways, guiding it by hands and arms, and I hook it up the 1445 with some chain and pick it up and set it down and guide it around with the PT. I was even thinking of vibrating post in the ground with it. The shaker motor is driven with a belt, and could be converter over with a hydraulic motor. I have a hydraulic shaker on the back of my Davis sneaker cable layer.

Re: Jim\'s new projects

We are pouring the concrete floor today. I will post pictures tonight. I use the PT to lift some of the heavier equipment over and in to the driveway to get them out of the way so that the floor could be poured.

Versatile little bugger! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Re: Jim\'s new projects

Here is the inside. Plenty of room for the little guy. I think I am going to build some kind of storage rack behind the building for the attachments. I have seen a post or two from guys who have built racks. Maybe a nice lean-to. I still have a bit of the steel left for a roof and some sides.
