Jinma 284 Overheating

Sounds like a flow test on the rad is in order. no need to go to the expense to replace a damaged head without checking the radiator.. don't want it to kill the new head.. etc.

High: Did you try Steel Seal to fix your gasket leak problem? Does it work? I have similar problem on a gasoline engine but before I try I would very much appreciate your experience with that or similar products.

thank you

<font color="blue"> One strange thing that happened when I removed my valve cover was that my starting circuit is somehow screwed up. The only wire I removed was a green one that looked to be connected to a ground bar. I connected it back up with no problems. Then I couldn't start the tractor using the key. I have been having problems with the ignition switch, but only for the gauges. I got a new one at NAPA and the gauges work fine, but still no starting. Anyone have any problems like this?

Hey TJ,

Check the Clutch Safety/Starter Lockout, Switch. You can test it by removing it and connecting the wires direct. Mine wnet out several months ago. I threw mine in the trash. Don't tell Harry though. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif It is best to get a new switch if yours is faulty.

Get your tractors running &
Have a nice day,

Did you perhaps blow a fuse? Yes, these ignition switches are of the inferior design and do fail. Mine is still original but I wired a relay to handle the high current to the glow plugs.
Joe, what do you mean???Don't tell Harry? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I can and do take a ribbing. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

PS I do think his head gasket is his problem as we have had reports of head gaskets failing. Not a big job but I would make sure rad tubes are flowing.

If your starting problem, (starter not cranking?) began after working on the top of the engine then you probably blew a fuse. The green wire is not a ground, it's the 12 volt supply that goes to the buss bar on the glow plugs. Be sure that it is connected correctly and not shorted to ground.

Sorry to hear about the leaking head gasket. It's true that it's not all that bad a job to replace. Just keep things in order and clean. The head may not be warped, thus no machining required and just a new gasket. Get the flatness of it checked if you don't have the tools to do it. Otherwise the new gasket won't last long.

Thanks for all the input. Even though it looks like the head gasket is leaking exhaust gas, I think the main problem is still the radiator. I keep getting a lot of dirt out of the fins. I have a furnace filter over it and it still gets filled up.
I don't understand the busbar, looked like a ground bar. I guess I need to look at it a little closer. I put in a mechanical temp gauge so I could run the tractor. I found some blown fuses, but it didn't seem to help the cranking issue. I guess if I have a 12V wire grounded it's not helping things. I think I need to get the original ignition switch and try to fix the wiring.
Has anyone replaced the radiator with something better? I think stopping every 20 minutes to clean the radiator is not very efficient. I guess I'll try the head gasket over the winter.

You probably already know this but having to stop every 20 minutes to clean the radiator is nowhere near the normal bell curve. I would suggest you bite the bullet and replace the head gasket and proceed from there. Surely the temp variation yu are experiencing are not good for the engine.
