Hmmmmm Lojack for the tractor maybe??? I wonder if that makes sense? Knowing how poor the key is for the 4110... a total joke, fits all such machines... I was always amazed that my original selling dealer just lined them up outside along the road without a fence... and still never had a problem with theft or vandalism. Implements disappearing from his yard... yes, but never tractors.

I wonder what the message is in that fact.

Doug I know most of the rental companies are installing LoJack type devices on alot of their more portable expensive equipment. So the technology is there. I think now it would be a question of initial cost and probably a modest monthly service fee.

Another possibility could be to find a reasonably nearby razor wire and guarded equipment yard and pay for an overnight stay. You can't be the only person with this sort of problem, so it would be a business opportunity for someone to provide secure storage.

I will admit that I hadn't thought a hoot about what it would take to successfully execute backhoe work in the inner city... particularly in the worst congested and currently most dangerous neighborhood in the inner city. My small business world stops at Boston's famous Route 128 and rarely goes beyond that boundary except for "friend of a friend" type personal connections. All of you folks are bringing up some very good points and suggestions, some of which are even quite applicable to work out here in the suburbs. But at the end of the day I've got to ask myself: Am I willing to take on that kind of hassle and personal and financial risk. For now, I think the answer is still a no.

IMHO the personal risk is what would stop me. If it was merely theft risk I would price accordingly and look at rental equipment or razor-wire storage areas. But if the job's under a million (as if it wouldn't be) I can't imagine taking any significant personal safety risk for it.

Back in the late 90's, my brother and I drove by this Kragen auto parts that we were supposed to do. Notice that I said "drove by", we never even stopped, told the contractor to get somebody else. Sometimes the risk just is not worth it.

I worked in East St. Louis for a couple years. One Monday there was a difference, the building across the street and down the block was just a small pile of rubble. I asked if there was an expansion or some re-development. "Nope, stole it" was the answer. Huh? Yep, they ran into the 3 story brick apartment building with a car and truck until it was knocked down. Then they took all the whole bricks, wire plumbing and fixtures. The remains were hauled off in 3-4 dump trucks. This was all done between Friday at 5pm and Monday at 6 am.

Another time one of the office ladies was at the stop sign 2 blocks from the plant and a man was crossing in front of her. He opens the hood, pulls out some side cutters and take the battery. All while the engine was running! She stayed in the car until someone from the plant came by and brought her to work.

The parking lots at the plant were surrounded by 10' fence topped with barbwire. A kid climbed the fence and stole a hood off a car, and there was a guard watching the video.

I wouldn't want to make a living in that area!
