Had to turn down my first inquiry of the day without even looking at the jobsite due to security issues. We are talking a sweet, doable job... but in a location where crime is a way of life and folks die on the streets almost every week. The potential client's memorable quote: "Jobsite vandalism hasn't been that bad to date"... after which he strongly urged me to get the job done in one day so that I wouldn't have to leave the tractor there overnight. Unfortunately, it is at least a two-day job and there is no vandalism or business interruption insurance on the red beast (just WAY too expensive!). Carting it back home each night is not an option given the distance.

This brings me back to the whole issue of leaving a tractor and/or trailer at any remote jobsite overnight. I've had to deal with nosy neighbors, kids and safety issues... but not yet outright vandalism or theft. For those who do leave their tractors at remote jobsites overnight... besides insurance, what special measures have you taken to protect your investment?

Even with my own considerable "arsenal"... I'd be outgunned in that neighborhood about six to one.

There's no place like home for the red beast... but that ain't always possible. Not unless I give up on trying to scratch by a living here.

Doug I think I know the area of the city you are talking about and if it was me I would not even attempt it unless you could rent a piece of equipment that comes standard with a cab that resembles an Armoured truck !!!!!!!!!

can you price security guards into your job? unless it was the only work around and you needed it it sounds like its best to pass on it.

Listen I work for a steel fabricator and I think I can get ya a deal on some 1" thick plate. All ya got to do is come up with some brackets to attack the plate to the 4110 and you got it licked :D

Oh brother!!! Ed, I think Steve had the much better idea... insured rental equipment... and build the loss of deductible into the price.

A steel fabricator, heh??? Dang, why have you got to be so far away. You don't happen to work for those folks in Maine who built my dump trailer... do you???

Yea I think rental equipment is the way to go if you dare venture into that part of town.

No we don't build trailers, but If you got it in the Jay/Farmington area that's not far from the house.

We build buildings, great big buildings. One Lincoln Street, Millenium Place, The hotel at the Boston Conventon Center, and most of the big buildings that have gone up in the past 10 years down by the convention center. I am the outside field rep I spend most of my time down your neck of the woods. :)
