Complicated ?
After many years of working on them I only figgered it for myself that it had 2 sisteemes.
1. Where the oil gets pumped in a constant circel(the low pressure side )
2. The high pressure side is like a reservoir on a hill. If you need something to work you open a tap and you have flow and pressure.

I believe I understand JD's closed center hyd systems a lot better now after reading/posting on tractor discussion forums that back when I served 13 yrs as a JD dealer service manager solving closed center problems.

I finally had time to split it. Here are some pictures. I think the trans pump is shot.

I found the pump, but haven't had any luck so far with that adapter.

Did you do your tests before you oped up the tractor ?

Golden rule no 1 Do your tests before splitting ! Then you know what to look for !

Sorry to say....rebuild the tractor and do your tests as stated in post 2

It has quite a bit of scarring. I saw a few videos online and they said that it should be glass like smooth. It also has a lot of play in the shaft

Today I opened up the cover underneath the steering column. The oil smelled really bad (burnt) and there is quite a bit of grey metal floating inside. The hole highlited on the last photo leads nowhere on the cover.

You have powersteering. I am willing to help you with this problem. That oilleak can be repaired after solving you main problem. Testing needs to be done !
