John Deere 2305 Compact Tractor Transmission and rear PTO failure

Even worse the dealer will likely make a nice $2000 or so profit on the parts from your misfortune. One of the reasons I sold my 2210 was fear of pto failure using my wood chipper or tiller. Might be a good time to get your salesman involved. On something so major trading it in so they can fix it during a slow time and throw the parts in at cost and then re-sell it. Just thinking it might be the cheaper way out. Your likely not going to want to use it again for fear of failure anyway.

I really am surprised that there is not a class action suit against Deere on this series of tractor

I bought my 2305 in July 2007, so probably have the older version. After I read about this issue I quit using my 2305 for rear-PTO implements since I also have a 5055D which works much better with those implements anyway. At this point my 2305 is purely lawnmower (62C) and snowblower (47" JD blower), so with those attachments only use the mid PTO. Not understanding much about the inner workings of the PTO, can I expect having relatively low chance for the PTO failure? I guess what I'm really asking, is the mid PTO fully independent from the rear PTO in this tractor?

Not really the bearings are supported by the case near the rear. A shock load can cause a crack in the case. I've heard, read of such a failure from hitting a brick or relative solid object with the mmm. remember if you hit something, that may be an insurable loss. Check with your insurance broker.

I have a 07 I bought in aug of 07. How do you know if I have the new case or not? I have not used the pto much, just a couple dozen post holes and have no problem so far with 480hr. thanks Mark

When I purchased a 2305 the dealer was very vocal in explaining to me that the lift was not like on my other tractors. He advised it was either up or down. He advised a PTO shaft of incorrect length could and would wreck havoc on the PTO shaft casing, from either end or side thrust pressure, in very short order. He also advised for three point PTO driven attachment to always make sure I used a weak shear bolt or a loose slip clutch. He advised the engine was more torquey that a lot of people realized. I have seen people using small units with rotary cutters and tillers that would actually continully stall the engine when using the cutter or tiller. I have so far not observed any indication of a case problem on the 2305 I own and I have called upon it to do some things I didn't think it would.

The manual should have explained all that very important information.

Just because you bought in aug 2007 doesn't mean you have the new case. Actually I'd bet you have the old one as the change was in late 2007 of production. Your unit may have sat at the dealer for 6 months or more. The case failure is sudden, no sign of wear until it breaks.

The dealer likely had seen the failure first hand. He is entirely correct. The support for the bearing at the internal end of the pto shaft lacks substance. Any impact inwards or substantial side load will definitely end in a major failure. I had an aviation mecanic (frien) look at the broken shaft, he identified engineered weak points in the pto shaft itself (I guess its there to serve as a shear point for internal protection). All I can say is be careful with jd2305 transimission. Mine sees little to no pto use because of it. I pretty much only use it for the BH now. Again my failure was on the new version which is only margainly better IMHO.

My question is how do you know if you have the new case or not? I saw somewhere that beginning at serial# 227697 it changes to a new pto. Can anyone confirm. Thanks Mark
