John Deere 2305 Compact Tractor Transmission and rear PTO failure

/ John Deere 2305 Compact Tractor Transmission and rear PTO failure #81
Did a bunch of loader work moving gravel so I was on and off of the pavement and I noticed some spots on the driveway. Took it into the dealer they thought that perhaps the gasket on the rockshaft was leaking so they replaced that, only then did they notice that after cleaning up the area that the rear transaxel was leaking and had been what looked to be epoxied. SON OF A !!!!!! 2000 for the part and roughly 3000+ in labor. Not sure what to do from here. I used mine for loader work and MMM, no rear PTO impliments. Granted I bought it at a farm auction so I'm more or less screwed.

Sucks. I read of some failures stemming from the mid PTO. One in particular hit a brick with his MNM which jammed in good. The shock went up the drive line and broke the case near the rear PTO shaft.

Epoxy!! What an a$$whole!!

So is this the culprit?
Tuff Torq | K92

Tuff torq recommends synthetic in their K46 trannys. They are prone to problems too.

Does this tractor really use a K92?

Yes K92 is the one. Found it somewhere in the documentation when I bought my tractor but that was 10 years ago and I've slept since then. Tufftorq is part of Kanzaki and Kanzaki is part of Yanmar if I remember correctly.

The Factory name plate on the small JD tractors is a Yanmar plate, theyre made in Japan by Yanmar for JD.

The Tuff Torq k92 is not used in the 2305/2210. The only tractors using this transmission are the Simplicity Legacy XL and John Deere x700's.

Ok so what one is on the 2210/2305?

What brand/model is it, I don't know, I'm wanting an answer to that myself. It's probably some Yanmar/John Deere product specially built for the machine.

I say the k92 is not in the 2210/2305's because these tractors have a 2 speed transmission (as you know), while the k92 is single ranged. Take a look at both of the rear ends installed in a tractor---they look completely different. The Tuff Torq also has quite a bit weaker hydraulic pump than the 2210/2305.

Does anyone know what the last series number built that way is?

you can go to deereparts.com and see a parts view of the tranny. You can also buy a service manual on disk or paper. It won't be a simple job if I'm thinking correctly. But I have slept since then.

What exactly do you have broken? Is it the shaft that the lift arms attach to or is the housing broke? Do you have pictures?

As a owner of a 2009 2305, I have reading all the comments about the transmission and rear PTO failure's and the repair cost in most postings at over half the cost of the orginal tractor. While I haven't had a problem (knock on wood) yet, I am just wondering how many 2305's were made and what percentage have experienced rear end failure? Is this problem just unique to the 2305 or do other brands ( kubota, koiti, massy ferguson, and yes even Yanmar's) have the same issues and we just don't hear about them. I worked in the auto industry and I know most suppliers make parts a lot of different companies and just wondering if a lot of the scuts don't use the same rear ends? Just wondering !!!

Have you read up to know which side of the serial number break your tractor is on? Later transmissions were beefed up.

Welcome to TBN!
No one here will be able to give you firm numbers like you want-and I'm sure JD aint tellin' either!

Good advice.

I did contact my local JD dealer where the tractor was purchased to inquire about the rear end problems. The same dealers owns most of the JD dealerships in Middle Tennessee. He asked for my ID control number and they could tell me when the engine was made, when it was the month tractor was assembled and engine installed and said from the control number 107101 and said my serial number should not have this issue. So I am not sure when the upgrade actually was made but according to what they told me, I would assume the upgrade is sometime before 2/19/2009. I hope this helps other member. I would still like to know if this was a problem unique to the JD 2305 or did other brands of tractors use this same tuff touque rear end and have the same issues?

Pretty sure that myself or somebody posted the serial number split here on this very topic.
If you look here, you can find the split. I hesitate to spoon feed people at actual number without them working a little for it.

Iirc it was around august 2007. Mine was an "upgraded" 2008 when it failed. All things, all brands have quirks, some minor, some major. This one is major.

"Quirk"? yelbike, you're being a little too kind. A $5600 repair is a bit more than a quirk, even a major quirk.

Is it safe to say that when I had this repair done in Aug 2010 they used upgraded parts? I still am much more careful with my tractor than I was in the beginning. I thought I had a work horse but now I baby the PTO quite a bit. Maybe that's a good rule of thumb anyway.

Nearly 4 years later I'm still mad about this issue and JD's refusal to offer ANY assistance.

No manufacture would be in business if they warranty repaired every broken item on a 5yr old machine used by who knows where and how.
There was a link one time to an abusive operator of a 2305 on U-tube yanking tree out. He had a long chain and would take a top speed run to yank again and again until the tree roots gave. I'm sure he would be all hissy at JD when he smashes something.
