John Deere 2350
My neighbor has a John Deere 2350 tractor and had bought a woodsplitter to run off the PTO. The splitter runs okay but does not have enough power to actually split wood. How do I check to see if the fluid levels are sufficient to run the PTO, and I am assuming it's hydraulic, as I'm not a very mechanically minded person and actually have very little experience with this. Any basic help would be appreciated (diagrams even more so.) Thanks, John

Hmm - with pto's you would want to have the tractor engine running at pto speed to make the most of it. is the tractor running at pto speed? Also not sure what kind of pto splitter you have and what pump the pto shaft is connected to is he using ?

Hyd/trans oil dipstick will be by right heel when operator is sitting in the seat. Is there a control knob between the 2 gearshift handles? Does a pto hyd pump power wood splitter?

Thanks Radioman, yes the engine was running and revved up (I am assuming PTO speed). The splitter is one that he bought at Princess Auto (not sure of the brand name). It worked well last October...and this year not so. Can I post photos of it here for you to see better..like I say I'm not too mechanical on this, but another friend is. (actually asking this for him).

Okay, thanks..I know that the dipstick is located just behind the seat to the right of a filler cap, and opening that cap I see no oil at a level to see it, but there is oil on the clean stick (reinserted). Just wondering if the oil level is too low to completely power up the PTO to give the splitter the needed thrust to split the wood. We ran it yesterday while increasing the tractor rev speed so to increase the power to the splitter but it still does not seem sufficient.

When checking the hydraulic oil have the tractor running (idling), just set the dipstick in, do not thread it on.
The tach should have a mark that indicates engine rpm for 540 PTO rpm.

I am not following why you need the tractor's PTO. Does it power a pump for the splitter? The problem may be with the splitter, not the tractor.

Small correction: 2350 dipstick has no threads on it as your 2030 but just sticks in the tube. Thanks for pointing out tractor needs to be idling to check hyd fluid level as I forgot to mention that.

Once we learn if this is a PTO powered splitter or one plumbed into the hydraulics of the JD 2350, we should be able to sort through his problem.

The 2350 has 55 hp on the PTO and 13GPM on the hydraulics, so shouldn't be short of power on the tractor end of either situation. ;)

Okay, thanks..I know that the dipstick is located just behind the seat to the right of a filler cap,

trans oil dipstick isn't located close to hyd oil filler cap.
