John Deere 265 GT Rough Idle

Folks, i have a 1994 (i think) John Deere 265 thats experiencing a rough idle. I'm trying to upload a video to youtube so you can hear and see it, but here's what its doing: some kind of wierd issue with the idle. I changed the battery a few months ago in preparation for winter (plowing and moving firewood) but recently it has a lope to the idle. It has to be jumped to get it started so i think its a power issue, but once its running, and the cables are removed, the lope begins. I'm thinking for $40 i should just change the battery again, but then i thought it could also be the mechanical fuel pump too.

I see noone has posted a response to this old thread. Maybe you have resolved the problem but I can tell you for sure it isn't the battery. I would start with a good carb. cleaning. It sounds as though it is surging/starving for fuel. This most likely is caused from a plugged jet in the carb. Make sure you have a good supply of fuel to the carb and if you do then it's time to take the carb apart.

definately carb. i had same tractor with same issue before i traded it in back in 99. My carb was far too gone becuase i cleaned it and it was till messed up. put a new carb on it and it ran good. You dont even need a battery to run that thing and wont make a difference in your idle. For the longest time, my battery wouldnt hold a charge becuase it was so bad and i would jump it using a booster pack whenever i needed it. Remeber now, your tractor and or car does not run off the battery
