john deere 318 onan engine

i bought a 1988 j.d 318 with an onan pretty cheap....it had a bad starter and flywheel. i bought a new starter and flywheel./....installed it....it test run fine on the bench.....i put the engine back in the tractor...it started up fine one time...them the starter sounded like ****....the teeth on the flywheel are getting burred up. im at lost with whats going on with this????? it does have the extra solonoid box sol;d by john deere.....i took the wiring off and bypassed this..starter still dont sound good. what the **** am i missing here???? i been around john deeres all my life..thuis one has me puzzled. im ready to buy a whole new engine. i have reapinted the whole machine..restored to showroom condition. i cant quit now. please give me some advice????? i even have a brand new battery in it. onans are supposed to be great engines...this one here is becoming a pain in my ***.

There is an aftermarket item to help the engine start better, I bought it off amazon, and have not put it on yet. I went with an electric fuel pump and two cranks and the tractor is running.

Were the starter and flywheel actually used from ebay or other auction site? I would say the starter that you purchased is bad, you say 318 Onan, but the Onan used was either the b43 or the P218g. The b43 has to be set for backlash, the p218g did not (bolt in).

So what do you really have?
