John Deere 401C Hydro trouble

Will I still have to drain the transmission of it's 10 gallon of oil is the question. I've not getting a good seal on the mentioned filter, the new flat rubber gasket(oem part R34733) is slightly bigger and the old one has a better fit. I'll have a drip every 20 seconds or so. The O-rings were changed.

One doesn't have to drain hyd oil on the AG version to change hyd filter

Ok, reseated the filter using the new flat gasket as the other one was pinched. Lot of play in the new one but managed to get it on after countless of time trying to avoid another pinch :smiley_aafz: No more leaks  PS bypassed and still no function on the loader
There's no relief valve on the vertical filter so I will remove the valve on the pressure control valve when time becomes available. I do feel the pulsating on the outlet hose of the hydraulic pump if that means anything :licking: IMG_1098[1].JPGIMG_1097[1].JPG Where do I put the pressure gauge on the hydraulic pump?

You can remove either of 2 ORB plugs on RH side of frt portion(head) of hyd pump to install a gauge. Photos below has plug spec's. & location

After removing the inside floor grate, voila the mentioned filter relief valve  along with better access to the connections :)

For the filter cover, did you install the packing (square "O ring") in the transmission case or on the filter housing?
I had my first ever "fail" too, I pinched the packing on install, massive leak. It took two more installs to get it right.

It wouldn't stay on the transmission case so I put it on the filter housing and slowly poked the gasket inside the case as I tighten it up(time consuming). I too had a massive leak because of a pinched gasket which I wasn't aware of:banghead:

Finally got the pressure gauge on via PS line and only have around 300 psi. I will check the flow from the transmission pump next, with time slots in my schedule. Can I remove the pressure control valve without 10 gallons seeking ground? Is it only the drain plugs which will pour out the contents of the sump or is there others I should be aware of?

I didn't test the flow from the transmission pump as time was against me as Fall as arrived and will be cold soon. How does the pressure relief valve come out? You would figure it to be somewhat under spring pressure as the cap is tightened but it's not the case here! Can it be seized in the housing?

Yes, you will lose some oil, but 10 gallons. You could drop the transmission filter and put a 5 gallon bucket below the opening. The transmission pump, pumps to the transmission filter first. Be aware, only run the engine a few SECONDS! If the transmission pump works as it should flow is about 6 gallons, per minute. You will fill the 5 gallon bucket in less than one minute.

I am not familiar with the Industrial Deeres, on the AG version a sleeve comes out with a spool and spring inside between two roll pins. Parts drawing show an exploded view. Drawing is 2030AG, NOT yours

My pressure relief valve is in the exact spot on the transmission as shown in your pic. It should be loose in there or am I overlooking on how it comes out? I do see the rolled pins inside, are they there to hold the assembly together as one part?

Yes, it should be loose enough to slide right out. The roll pins hold internal parts (spring and spool) in body (at least that's how AG tractors are. Over pressure causes the spool to compress the spring and open a passage back to sump.

I've tried using a punch with no success :( It's stuck in there, now what do I do? I'm able to turn the roll pins with needle pliers but that's about it!

OK, I got it out after cluing there wasn't a spring behind it. I didn't take it apart but I made sure everything was loose in it! Maybe I should of taken it apart and inspect for wear, next time. I observed a pressure of 2000psi temporary until I I tried to lift the bucket. The pressure has been fluctuating and the FEL along with the PS are slow to react, could be the RPM's are on the low side. Somewhat encouraged and will top up the tranny and see if that helps any. Now I need to find a favorable spot to install the pressure gauge permanently. Tried using the small screw on the main pump but cannot find a suitable adapter fitting.

Here's a fitting that will fit in frt RH side of pump that will require a coupler that JD dealer can order. Have you investigated a good hyd supply/repair business for a fitting?

I think you should change your avatar name to "Thx Jim" :) You've been very helpful as always
I will contact my dealer for the adapter as my neighbor's hydraulic shop couldn't match the thread size on your previous post.

Seriously I've considered changing my handle to Jim in Tx. Looking up information helps keep my old brain functioning!!!

I pinpoint the culprit of my FEL and steering woes on the Pressure Control Valve. Local dealer is unable to get one or kit and says they're discountinued. Any other source to find one. What's the correct part #? I could fabricate another style into the system by blocking off the transmission two holes with a plate and maybe using one hole for return of over pressure.https://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/asset.php?fid=584263&uid=344904&d=1603539926

What parts do you need for it? Looking an JD parts, parts appear to be available, most are O-rings, fittings, the internal valve and spring are available. If the housing is OK, you should be able to get any internal part. The housing is BIG money, but available too. $1625
