John Deere 450 B

. . . mechanically it is decent, the steering works well, has new rollers, and I figured the chain and sprockets appear to have about 40 + % left, at least in my opinion, that's why I was
interested in others opinion. Plus I only payed $3850.00 for it . . .
Probably worth half of that in scrap iron. :D
If that's all you paid for it, and it RUNS??? Don't worry about it. ;)

As far as the U/C, your 40% is probably close. I doubt that the pins and bushings are tight enough to seize up, so you shouldn't have to worry about that.

Just FYI, proper terminology for dozer undercarriage is:
Rails. (not chains) The rail (each segment looks like a piece of railroad track, doesn't it) contains the wear surface, the pins and bushings, and provide an attachment point for the grouser pads. The complete rail with the grouser pads attached would be called the tracks.
Big pulley at the front is the idler.
Big pulley at the back with teeth is the sprocket. Sprocket teeth contact the bushings. That's what makes it move.
Little pulleys (top and bottom) are rollers.

It's always been called chain around any track repair place I've been around and here's what Berco (who mfg's it) calls it...

Not going to argue. You can call it what you will. I've owned dozers before, and I've been around them for 40 years.

FWIW, Berco is a European company. Terminology can vary across the pond. :D

What does owning dozers have to do with it?? I've been running dozers since I was a kid as my dad had one, and I've owned dozers myself most of my adult life, from a CAT D-7 on down to the 450 I own now, more than 40 years...

Further more, last I heard, Berco still makes the tracks for CAT, and when you go for parts, CAT calls them "chains"... BUT, you are right about one thing, you can call them what ever you want... :)

Berco calls them rails too- read the link
Rail surface induction hardened (HRC 53) to the wear limit (HRC > 45)..

Exactly, the whole thing is called "chain" a point on the chain link is the "rail"...

Thing is, the OP was corrected for using chain, and the OP was right...

SR,
I'm not interested in a peeing contest.
I started running and working on heavy equipment, including track machines, when I was 14. I've NEVER seen (in repair manuals, etc) or heard the word "chain" used in reference to the undercarriage of ANY tracked piece of equipment.

FWIW, Go to the respective website. JD as well as CAT calls them "tracks." No mention of "chain."

As I said above, YOU are welcome to call it what you want.

Over and out.

One more time... As complete, they are called tracks... APART there are separate parts, including chains with a part of the "link" called the rail...

I'm not going to put my resume out here.... as it really doesn't matter, but I'm ALSO not going to change the names of the track parts used to make a complete track...
