So what does everyone think?

Thanks,
Ann

Seriously? I'd ask your Dad his opinion...I reckon he'll know what he needs...undoubtedly better then any of us...

Ann, I'd do some more checking around. The blades that these guys are trying to sell you is light to medium duty at best. A good 84" blade is going to weigh a minimum of 450lbs. Now if a person was to go lighter than that, then the Woods blades may very well be better than the Land Prides. But if you stay with the size and duty rating that you should be looking at, Woods is not any better than LP, and may not be as good IMO. I know that Woods does not even have a blade to compare to the LP RBT3584 that I had recommended. I have no idea what your budget is and I do know that the LP blade that I have recommended is costly. There are several rear blades that will fit your requirements, you just need to track them down, but remember that the total weight of the implement should be no less than 450lbs if you want it to hold up.

Don't be like I was and listened to my dealer and bought what he recommended. I sort of questioned him about it and he said that it was fine for my tractor. I bent it THE FIRST TIME that I used it. Told the dealer about it and I was told that I had abused it and it was my tough luck.

I just don't want you guys to get something that really is not intended for your size of tractor. Research, research, research.

Good luck ;)

Dad is back to thinking a 6 ft blade... they are easier to find... He just wants it on... as it started spitting snow today. It does not feel an rear blade should cost this much. But, also agrees the cheap ones will not last.

He ruled out the one where it would tilt... he is thinking his rear remote will not work with the bucket on front.

It is not like I can take him to pick out a blade.... I didn't realize these are not kept on hand and special order.

I heard somewhere that Frontier was linked to Woods. Get a good heavy duty blade, it can take a true beating although it sounds like your father is really easy on his tractor. :)

Thanks Brian -- there are three more places on the Land Pride web site listing other dealers about an hour away. I will call them tomorrow.

Right now the price is not a big factor -- I just want to get the right rear blade on his tractor and it will work.

If you take a look at Dad's yellow tractor -- IH -- it was new in 1982... it is not pretty. It has pushed over trees, hauled trees, pulled trees, bulldozed buildings, etc. It needs to go to the shop... I have gotten to the point, I won't drive it as the brakes are out and you have to adjust the choke to keep it running... LOL

This old tractor has the weight just right... and now I need to get the John Deere beefed up, so the wheels are staying on the ground in the back.

I heard the same thing about Frontier... but the Frontier HD blade is about $300 higher then the Woods blade... if I just go on weight and length.

Thanks again for the input...

OK, I found the original John Deere 45 blade that was sold with this tractor. I had to get it.... even if it meant driving 6 hours today. It is in good shape, needs to be repainted on the blade. The original serial number and stickers are on it. It is 7 ft. long, weighs over 350 pounds. You can either push snow or pull snow...

I called several places and it will be several weeks before they can get the Land Pride blade in. We will see how the original blade does since we couldn't get anything until after we will probably have snow.

So, for now we have the blade issue resolved.

Thanks to everyone for your patience.

I will gladly get you a picture. I got busy today moving things before the snow blows and had forgotten the camera.

I paid $400 bucks for it and have no regrets of driving that far to get it. It turns all the way around, so we can push snow or pull snow. A six ft blade would have been to small and a 5 ft would have been way to small .... the way Dad has it set. VERY HAPPY I CHECKED with you guys on size.

Anne; I use a weight box filled with old lifting weights and a couple of JD weights on top. Makes it relatively easy to change the amount of weight you carry.

Yep, looks like West Central Iowa alright!!! ;)

I can't tell in the pictures if this is an option, but the rear tires can be set out and help a LOT with stability.

I understand your Dad's hesitation about fluid in the rears also. I grew up with calcium chloride used for ballast. Also dealt with rusted rims because of the corrosive value of the fluid. Today there are several options, the best being Rim Guard, totally non corrosive and can be used with tubeless tires. Next best is anti-freeze or windshield washer solutions. Again, won't rust the rims. If your Dad uses his loader to it's capacity his blade isn't going to help much for ballast. Really need fluid or wheel weights, which are hard to find without paying an arm and a leg.

I hope your Dad gets many years of use from his tractor. I like him just from what you've spoken about him. You are blessed to have him around.
