John Deere 5300
Hello,

I've owned and operated my John Deere 5300 4WD tractor since it was new in 1996.

I'm trained as an aircraft mechanic, and have worked on vehicles of all sorts for more than 40 years.

I'm wanting a service manual for my 5300, which yesterday just turned 1500 hours total time since new.

I see on eBay "John Deere 5300 Tractor Tech. Repair Manual on CD!!!" for $110.

Is this a good manual?

Are manuals available for download anywhere?

Thanks for your help and advice.

The engine service manual for the 5300 is John Deere CTM125. Do a search of the web, you may need to try a few sites, but you should find a free copy to download. This shows how to adjust the values. I would be interested to know how much adjustment is needed.

Take a look at selectmanuals.com to get the tech manual for the tractor. You did not say if you got a loader, but here is a link to the operators manual of the loader you may have got.

Thanks for your reply.

I do not have a loader on my tractor.

According to the Operator's Manual I was supposed to "adjust engine valve clearance" at 600 hours!

And also at 600 hours I was supposed to "inspect fuel injectors", but I don't know what that inspection should consist of without referencing the engine service manual.

I will search for the CTM125 engine service manual, as well as look at selectmanuals.com for a tech manual.

I'll report back after I check the valve clearances.

For what it's worth the manual of my 5205 also suggested to check the rocker adjustment at 600 hours so I ordered the "required" tools and checked the clearances. Of the six valves, five were perfect and one was just slightly tight so I left them like that. I asked the dealer about the recommended checking of injectors after 600 hours and basically was told: if it ain't broke, don't f*** with it.

There is indeed some wisdom in the "if it ain't broke" theory of maintenance.

And similarly, a fellow I know who works at a dealer more or less said "it's fine so long as it's not blowing black smoke."

But it seems my tractor has started to blow just a little black smoke out the exhaust.

One cause for black smoke is clogged induction air filters. So I replaced both of those.

And still I have just a little black smoke.

A little smoke is normal. Do not be alarmed. The earlier 5D/Es smoked more than the 5000s with the same 3029 engine.

OK, thank you for this information.

I'm not alarmed yet. Just keeping an eye on it.

And in regular usage, it's hard to monitor the smoke output because I have rear exhaust on mine.

I took the exhaust stack off last year and installed the rear exhaust kit.

The engine service manual for the 5300 is John Deere CTM125. Do a search of the web, you may need to try a few sites, but you should find a free copy to download. This shows how to adjust the values. I would be interested to know how much adjustment is needed.

I located and downloaded the John Deere CTM125 engine service manual.

As per my engine's data plate I see:

*CD3029D242808*
3029DLV-02

When I go to the "Engine application chart" in the CTM125, my engine is not listed there.

Are you sure CTM125 is the correct engine service manual for me?

OK, I now have a PDF of the TM1520 manual.

But why, on the very first page, does it indicate that CTM8 is the correct engine manual, and not the CTM125?

Charles, I'm not at home, so I can't read it, but I have the CTM8, it should be on the way to you. I can send it, just can't read it to see. Hope it helps
