Smoking TC40DA on start up

My 29 starts up just fine. However after running about 15 seconds it does start to spit and studder and spill out smoke. There is times it will even choke itself out and I will have to re-start. Dealer says he is not sure why it is doing that but would be glad to look at it for a fee now that it is two years old.

Murph,

Does it die lean, or die fat? If it's dying lean, it's a fuel restriction problem of some sort. If fat, it's worn injectors (not likely for 2 years old) or maybe even a leaky injector. It could also be a glo plug. In any case, it's likely to slowly worsen. Hopefully very slowly. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I have a question. In many of these post and others glo plugs are mentioned when ever questions about starting come up. Are the glo plugs on the new Boomers used for all starts? This is not the way it has been for years prior. Glo Plugs were only used when necessary. On my 2120, I probably use the glo plugs for only about 10% of the starts in a year. On the TN which does not have glo plugs, I very rairly use the air preheat.

I run them whenever the engine is cold, regardless of outside temp. 10 seconds does the trick in the winter (much helped by the block heater). 5 seconds in the summer. My machine doesn't automatically shut them down when they get up to temp (I think some of the bigger machines do).

I use the preheat whenever the engine is "cold", regardless of the temps outside. The only time my TC40D smokes is when it is extremely cold and having problems warming up (below zero f).

Oh, my TC40D is over 4 years old.

On every start, I always hold the key until the glow plug light goes out. If I don't do this, even on a warmed engine, it runs rough initially.

Me too Mike. Although on the TC18, the glow plugs have no timer. I keep them glowing for 10 seconds or so, it starts so much easier. Cranks longer and runs rougher for a bit if I don't.

I know I am more of a Deere man and should not be posting here but we had a new 790 in the shop and I started it to move it and it ran real rough always. Sputtering when you give it a little throttle, smoked bad. My 790 never did this and the 990 surely does not run rough even when it is below zero and no starting aid.

I almost always hold the glow pulg till the light goes out on my 1920 if it is not a warmed engine. I do forget occasionally.. and so far have noticed no difference in starting. I just try to make a practice of using them to make it easier ont he engine initially.

Yes, they cycle on for 6 seconds on all starts. This is one of the relays that is connected to the ignition. The real question is weather or not you wait for them to go full cycle before starting the tractor.
