Must be a new thing with them, got a Briggs that is in my replica project that is over 50 years old and still runs great
I have a 15HP single cylinder Briggs in my dad's 1972 Craftsman lawn tractor.
49 years old, and lots of hours, but still going strong.

Changed head gasket today
You can see where the gasket is damaged
And where is blew by on the head
Clean up head
And installed new gasket, notice the size difference of the new gasket.
Ready to mow again

Good job. You’ll be splitting cranks and sanding transmission friction plates in no time. Better than working crossword puzzles any day...... plus the satisfaction of doing it right, youself.

RE Old Briggs singles: one weak link (in something probably designed to last 6 to 10 years) is/was the oil slinger. Vanes are some sort of plastic, maybe nylon, and with age they get brittle and erode away. Pretty soon little to no oil is be’ in a slung, and the top end suffers.

Piston seized on the one pictured above, rod didn’t like not moving. On another the top end crank bushing became molten. Both engines 25+ y.o. Tear down revealed rounded off oiler slingers. Sad that some good things only last so long

Glad to see that you found the problem and fixed it. I found the same problem on a customers engine. There really should be another bolt there to hold that head against the cylinder.
