John Deere Full Throttle

Hmmm, Technically, that's not a run-a-way.

A mole hill don't make a mountain.

i believe that is splitting hairs...

if it starts up and goes to max throttle, with no throttle response.. i think that's safe to classify as a run away.

just because you can kill it by starving it one way or another does not change anything.

either choke the air off.. or the fuel.. or both.

don't matter if that is an electric key op valve or a twist in fuel petcock.. or a piece of rubber flap over the intake.

anywho.. with that reply.. I'm done with this thread. hairs are getting too fine to split anymore..

I would say it is a run-away if the governor no longer has control of engine speed. If the shut off, regardless of what kind does not work, it's not a run-away, it just wont shut off. The engine speed is still being controlled, and it has not gotten out of control speed wise.

Hunter,
Your fuel shut off solenoid (35) is easily removed and lubricated.

Say its a Yenmar.
Probably a spring off or out of tension on the inside of the governor. solenolds and electronics only replace the simple pull of the kill cable. If the spings are weak off or not working you will run oft or not start depending. check to see how the governor is lubed some are from the engine sump and some have a small reservoir.
good luck
if you have a warranty take it back

oh good.. the all knowing oracle wikipedia has spoken... :)

I think it's safe to say there are other runaway conditions.. like natural gas leaks near a running diesel... etc.

i realize wiki is a good fast source of info.. I just don't consider them an exhaustive 'last word' kind of place. generally good info.. some zingers though.

I hope the op finds out what his IP problem is before something gets damaged.

Thanks for the diagram for the fuel shut off. I am going to pull it tomorrow and make sure it is lubed. I talked to another service man who said that the injector rack is lubed by crankcase oil and if my viscosity is too high the rack might be sticking open until the oil gets up there to lube it. That would explain why after getting it to start and idle like normal it will run fine for the rest of the day. Also makes sense considering that the problem only happens when it gets below freezing. He suggested going from 15w to 5w. I am approaching the 400 hr service anyway so this will be a cheap attempt at a fix. Hopefully it works. I'll keep you all posted. Weather it is considered a runaway or not it still sucks. :)

if in real cold weather.. a 5w40 full synthetic might be real nice. I run it in my f450 with 7.3psd

stuck rack was what I have been thinking your problem was.. if you find out definitively.. let us know.

good luck.
