Does anyone know how to replace the friction disk on the hand throttle control on a John Deere 2840.

First, clean any rust from the exposed throttle control shaft under the friction discs. Then spray some penetrating oil on all components from the friction discs down. Drive out roll pin #14 and remove the lower lever #1. Then back off nut #12 and let spring slide down. Drive out the 2 lower #9 pins form the threaded sleeve and the lower friction disc retainer #8. It will probably take a lot of patience (and cursing), but try to slide down the threaded sleeve, spring and friction disc retainer. It might take a little heat to free them up. be careful with heat on the disc retainer because it is aluminum and will melt easily. After these items are slid down, you can pull up on the shaft and slide them all the way off. Then you need to remove the last 2 pins in the upper disc retainer and the throttle stop screw bracket so the shaft can be pulled out the rest of the way. Then you can put the new friction discs in as you slide the shaft back down through all the removed parts. Reassemble with new pins and adjust nut for desired tension. Sometimes the discs are not actually worn out but the 2 disc retainers get stuck on the shaft and the spring cant slide them together for proper operation. I recommend a small amount of never-seize on the retainers to prevent the repeat problem.

Thanks JD. My #11 spring is broken and one of the #10 disk is split, so the whole assembly will have to come out to repair. I think getting a pin punch lined up to take the roll pins out will be my most difficult problem.

My throttle control slips back reducing the RPM and I continuously have to throttle up. I figured you probably have repaired yours by now and wondered how you made out.
Also, can you adjust the tension nut without taken the assembly apart ? My spring is in good shape and I am hoping all I have to do is tighten the nut, if possible
with out taken it apart.
Please advise. Thanks, Duke

Yes, you can adjust the nut without disassembly. As long as the lower #8 is not stuck to the shaft it should respond well to adjusting the nut.

I took off the side cover to get to the spring to tighten the nut, however, there is no nut to tighten, just a spring. The assembly is different than the one you have
posted. I recently bought this tractor to restore it is a 2240 model, would you have an idea on how to fix this ?

Thank you,
Duke PS: I can't understand why it posted 3 times, tried to delete them but it will not work, appears there is something wrong with this site

You'll either have to replace friction washers or some how shim up the spring for more tension.
