as someone who has dealt directly with both big boxes as a mfg's sales rep- I can tell you no one but hd and lowes "set the price." they (the mfg) may make an item available to dealers at a price point where they can compete but they do not "set the price" for hd and lowes.
have you ever been in negotiations with a big box retailer? there is not much negotiation on the vendors part.
As true as this may be Jd can still set the price their dealers sell the entry level tractor for.

2* Whatever it looked like to you doesn't change the fact that I have actually sat in the seat of these machines and made the detirmination.

2*I just compared the specs in the JD literature on the JDx700 and the 2305.
The 2305 is both longer and heavier than the 700 series so where am I going wrong in translating this as the 2305 being bigger than the 700?

If I type in bold will that help.

I SAT IN THE SEAT OF 2305.

THE QUARTERS FELT CRAMPED AND UNCOMFORTABLE FOR ME.

I COULD CARE LESS IF THE MACHINE WAS HEAVIER AND LONGER.

THE X744 HAD MORE ROOM THAN I KNEW WHAT TO DO WITH.

NOW I KNOW THAT THE THE X744 WILL FIT IN TIGHTER SPOTS BECAUSE IT IS SHORTER

actually, i don't think you know what you are talking about.
the dealer may lead you to believe that.

spend a few hours researching the "federal fair trade act." let us know what you find out.

So how do you explaine the Dealers and Box Stores tractors being the same price?

i do not need to explain it.
you don't know what you are talking about.
i have already named the federal act that should enlighten you.

Your snide remarks and sarcastic attitude certainly don't help anything.
Just because you don't agree with me on certain points don't mean you have to act like a jerk.
It's time you cooled it.

Here is whats probably happening....

As a dealer (and I assume the box stores probably have to work with this also) we have somthing called MAP pricing (minimum advertisted pricing). When we run AD's part of the expense is paid by Kubota/Deere/Cub -- whoever. If your pricing falls below the MAP price then the OEM will not chipin to cover the cost of the advertising. There is no way the box stores would do this because they would loose a huge sum of money.

back on topic:

here's what my thoughts are on the LA140 JD:

brought the first one back because the fuel tank leaked all over my driveway when I filled it.
Called HD, woman in department told me to bring my old one back and they would give me another new one. No questions asked, didnt check my receipt or anything.

The new one, seemed to have a smaller fuel tank, but at least it doesn't leak!

There was no quick coupler for the deck wash, so I kept the original off the one I brought in.

The belt fell off the mower after a few startups, but I put it back on w/o too much trouble.

It has plenty of power; 23 HP B& S. sAy what you will about B & S, but their parts are widely available and seem more inexpensive than Kohler...

seems to go a bit slow (used to my JD GT 225)

doesn't have the greatest traction (oredered weight bracket from JD), but my GT has wheel weights, so in fairness, I will try it with the weight bracket and suitcase weights off my CUT...

seat is comfy, as is soft-grip steering wheel

no adjustment on drag links (my GT does)

large rims and tires, rides very smoothe

a little loud maybe, but 23 HP, not sure what to expect. I have muffs anyway

controls are easy to reach, electric PTO is great

mower looks like PITA to put on /off compared to my GT

pulls a trailer and dethatcher pretty well, no complaints other than a little slipping on inclines, again, hoping weights will straighten that out

cargo-mount system is nice, though I have nothing that uses it

am considering a plow blade for it, but JD website says for "snow only" which prolly = chincy

deck lift is nice and convenient

overall: I'd say it's a "B" I like it for what it was intended: mowing and pulling a small trailer. I will leave the serious work to my GT and CUT.
