I think it is all quite POSSIBLE.
Incredibly unlikely, very IMPROBABLE - but still POSSIBLE.
======================================================
There was a time when Micro-$oft had no "protection" on what it called its operating system - Dross somethingorother.

You were SUPPOSED TO pay for it, but it was widely distributed via sneaker-net and widely known that they wanted market-share (more importantly MIND share) for the long term more than money for the short term.
OK, so software copies are a lot cheaper to make than tractor copies, but if this dealer is determined to drive out all other brands in the area this COULD be a lost leader for a long term goal.
=======================================================
Again, COULD BE - although incredibly unlikely,,,

Another possibility is that after 40 years they are about to close up and retire anyway.
There could be all sorts of reasons for a massive fire sale of new inventory.

My imagination just went to the post about GM and I remembered the massive closings of Dodge/Plymouth/Chrysler dealerships.
If JD are about to shut down some franchises ... if, If, IF, maybe this dealer has a NEED to off load all his new inventory and become a used equipment dealer.
Not to start a false rumor, so let me re-state that; "If JD is about to pull THAT dealer's franchise maybe they have a need to off-load all their new inventory and become a used equipment dealer.."
If that were the case my guess is that they would limit it to a model (or two) for a while to hold onto the secret.

Guesses, all guesses (-:

I've seen a dealer loose his franchise, Deere comes and picks up all the unsold equipment when that happens.

If you are paying the $500 as cash and no financing is required, why is it necessary to sign papers?
What papers?

At least two bills of sale. I wouldn't buy a tractor from my best friend without at least a basic bill of sale w/ date, price & serial number.

I can see that for manufacturer owned equipment, i.e. "floor plan" inventory.
If this is an old fashioned dealer, it is at least POSSIBLE that they actually OWN it.

Anyway, a lot of speculation.

I am even more suspicious now that the agreed to new tractor that was supposedly 90% prepped and ready to go - is getting held back for a different "factory fresh" one that is being special ordered.

I smell "bait and switch" - - sorry to keep using software analogies, but the term "Vaporware" suggests itself.
I would want to (at LEAST) write my name on the hood with a non-erasable marker (-:

Got to admit I'm getting a little more suspicious of this deal.

Update: Dealer called today to let me know the timing of this deal. Wanted to know if I was OK ordering a new machine from the factory. He originally gave me that option but I told him the quicker we close the deal the better. He said his sales manager would like to keep the machine they showed me because it's the only new machine on their lot. So they would like to give me the next one they have on order scheduled to arrive first week in June. He said the 62D deck will take two weeks anyway so for two weeks more I get a tractor fresh from the factory. I was OK with that. He wants me to stop by to sign the sales agreement so we both know the deal is closed. I will stop by and sign papers on Thursday. In the mean time, he's OK with the 20 or so more hours I will be putting on my machine in May. I said before that I'm still crossing my fingers, at least until the papers are signed, which will be on Thursday.
Will the dealer have the yet to be delivered tractor's serial number? I don't see the reason of signing documents without it.

Where are all the "Big" risk takers? :B

He has his tractor currently and will not give it up until the dealer brings the new one. What in the world are you talking about?

If the dealer has been there for 40 years I really do not see the risk other than $500. He will read what he signs.

I could see it. I'm not familiar with Deere pricing, but see late-model used Kubotas all the time that are priced at or above what I could negotiate for a new one. Buyers will look at used models and not even ask how much a new one is - often only 10% higher. And that's the 10% that comes off of MSRP without even trying hard (it's the last 5% that requires talent). If a dealer can sell your used machine for more than he's into the new one, its a win-win.
