John Deere vs Kubota qustions?

Northoffrisco,

I'm south of Reno and have a relatively new B3350 - but then, any B3350 is going to be relatively new as they only started deliveries late last year and there won't be many in customers hands yet.

If you'd like to have a look at mine, contact me.

Since you live up high, you might want to consider a turbocharged tractor, which the B3350 is. A normally aspirated tractor will lose about 3% horsepower per thousand feet of altitude.

Rule number ONE - Everyone outgrows their first tractor. You learn on the first tractor what you "wish" you could have, then you get the next tractor with a bigger engine, more lifting capacity, closed cab, AC/Heat, Led lights all around, extra hyro controls, and finally a quick release for attachments. But, today you say - " I don't need any of those fancy do dads" , you'll learn we all have.

A 3320 has 32 engine HP and about 26 PTO HP. That power can handle a 72" finishing mower and a 60" rotary cutter for field mowing. If you expect to mow all 22 acres, I expect it would take you most of a weekend or a bit more (depending on the terrain and what you expect to be mowing).
As far as moving things...the loader is good for about 1000 lbs and you can use the 3PH or draw bar for towing trailers and other wheeled items.
If you expect to do ground engaging tasks (plowing), the 3320 might not be heavy enough and you might want to step up to the 4x20 series.
If you don't intend to mow finished lawn with your tractor, you might want to consider going for a used full sized utility tractor.

The loader is actually rated at 1600 pounds. My 3320 with forks would lift that too.

The 3R tractors are not small and are very capable. Depending on the type of terrain you are going to work, choose either Ag tires or turf tires. I would skip the industrial tires. They are stiff and a lousy compromise in my opinion. I have had all three styles and I will never have industrial tires again.

If you need more hp you can get a bigger 3R

The 1600 lb rating is at the pivot pins. Since you need a bucket, forks, bale spear or other QA attachment for lifting, that spec isn't particularly useful.
Here's a quote that explains it better then I could:
The 300CX will lift 1,122 lbs. to a maximum height of 102 inches, measured at the bucket edge. Measured from the pivot pins, the capacity is 1,598 lbs. The first rating is a more realistic measure of what you can expect from the loader, while the pivot pin rating relates more to gross lifting power. With a height limit of 59 inches, those capacities increase to 1,649 lbs at the bucket edge and 2,125 lbs. at the pivot pins.

When I wrote the 1000 lbs, I was referring to full height of around 88 inches.
To be fair, I doubt most people lift to full height (I know I don't) unless they're filling a dump truck. I keep my loads as low as possible.

I agree.

Of those, I would go with the JD, mainly because of an "American Pride" type of deal. In fact, 10 years ago, I was able to secure a big JD CUT (4120) that even had an American engine. The problem I see today is that you can no longer get those American engines in a JD CUT due to "tier 4" requirements, or so I hear. If you are able to locate a used, or dealer left over, 4000 series JD from back when they still made them, that would probably be your ultimate choice. Then you would be getting a good bit larger, significantly more capable, almost all "made in America" machine, without the power-robbing "tier 4" requirements.

That said, if you must go with a tractor that is still manufactured today, I would broaden your search a bit and look at the Kioti and Mahindra brands. Either will cost you a bit in resale value, but more than likely, give you a decent advantage in purchase price over a similarly sized JD or Kubota. Also, the Kiot (Korea), or the Mahindra (India), are not sourced or partly sourced from a fairly recent belligerent nation.

That "American Pride" may be somewhat misplaced. JD's CUTs, to the best of my knowledge, are made in India, engines are Japanese by "Yanmar". My Kubota is made in Japan, assembled in the US . . . many of the Kubota brand attachments are US made, some Canadian.

Some JD cuts have very poorly engineered 3 point hitch lower link attachments that are prone to failure, there have been problems with engine and clutch bell cast housing cracking as those castings support FEL attach points. Not saying the other brands are without issues. To avoid unpleasant surprises, best to do a search for "problems" for any model you are considering. There will be glowing reports, as it's human nature to tend to support decisions we've made. There's horror stories too, but what's important is how customer service handles those and that the issue is not endemic (e.g. MF's hydraulic pump in the '05 GC 2310).

All the time I thought my John Deere was as American as you can get, and I thought I was in the Georgia USA when I went through the John Deere factory. :confused3:

JD has had lots of tractors made by Yanmar, and plenty made in India. The 5E series is made there now, for sure....they also have lots of problems with melted components, and small fires....no joke.
