Buying Advice John Deere vs Kubota

/ John Deere vs Kubota #21
When we retired to the country...15+ years ago, I went tractor shopping. I settled on the Kubota...and got it, plus a loader, and several implements for not much more than the cost of the basic JD tractor. It has served me well all these years with little more than routine maintenance and care. I keep it indoors in my workshop, keep it fairly clean and do all the maintenance more frequently than the manual calls for. I did have a bearing go bad in the front axle a few years ago, and after rebuilding that, I switched to 80w90 lube in the axle...rather than the Super UDT...and have had no further troubles.

The Kubota B2910 is legendary in my opinion. Mine had the 60" MMM. Best lawn mower I've ever owned. Far superior to the JDs I've had. Loved that tractor. After running it a few hours I always walked away with a smile. Everything about it fit me. Lost it in a shop fire. When I tried to find a used one to replace it I realized the following that tractor has. You'd be shocked how much yours would sell for. :)

I wouldn't limit your choices to just those two just yet. I would recommend doing some research on the John Deere, Kubota, Kioti, Mahindra, New Holland, Case, etc. I know looks and build styling aren't everything but when I started looking I ruled out some machines immediately based on styling, colors, etc. You'll know pretty quickly if you don't like the styling, ergo's & controls of the tractor. Look at them in person see how different models fit you. If a local dealer isn't available to check them out, that alone may be a decision maker. It's not super critical, but if you don't like the look and feel of your tractor you probably won't be happy with it despite its performance. Narrow down your options of machines you like, then compare tech spec's, implement & attachment options and how they interchange on the tractor. You may not end up with what you thought you would in the beginning. I grew up on Farmall and started out looking at the new Case IH models but really didn't like them. I had a few friends that own and pushed Kubota or John Deere which I really liked when I used them. But after searching for my own I ended up with Mahindra. I just liked basically everything about them over the others. Not saying anything bad about the others, but after lots of comparisons I kept settling on the Mahindra. I've had it for almost 2 years now and couldn't be happier. It's Chevy, Ford, Dodge. Everyone has their opinion of what is great and what is junk based on personal experiences, but when dealing with any of the big common name brands, it's whatever fits and works best for YOU personally. That's what you'll be happiest with.

I spent months shopping and comparing everything, features, price, dealer etc. I ended up with a new JD3032E for my mostly clear 10 acres. I couldn't be happier with my choice. It has been flawless for 3 yearstractor.jpgwagon.jpg

I spent weeks researching 25-40hp tractors before pulling the trigger. I had a deposit on a like new 50 hour 2015 Deere 3038E that was coming in on trade at a Deere dealer in Ohio. I had a couple of weeks before that unit arrived, so I did research into and looked at many competitive units, including Kubota, Kioti, Tym, Mahindra, Branson, LS, and New Holland. I quickly realized that the FEL and 3-point capacities of most of these were far greater than a similarly priced 3038E, and there were many more useful features on those brands as well. I came close to buying a like new 3520 Branson, but it was near Tulsa, and I would have needed to make a special trip and rent a trailer and drive my "never been driven in a winter" '04 F250 to pick it up. When I saw the new local CL listing for the Mahindra and after looking at it (48 hours, always garage kept with bush hog, front snow plow, rear blade) at the same money as the Deere (which was an excellent deal), I immediately bought it. As for the Kubota, I looked at the L model, but new ones with features comparable to the Mahindra and others were priced much too high, and there were no used ones around. There was no dealer close to me, and the one I visited wasn't very enthusiastic about his machine. I also noticed many low hour E Series Deere tractors for sale in my area, and good prices. Why were so many people selling their virtually new tractors, and at such low prices -- were they not happy with them? I think all of the compact tractors these days are good quality and reliable, but when you compare them head to head in features, weight and capacities, for the dollar, it seems that Kubota and Deere are not at the top. The fact that there are so many Deere and Kubota tractors sold is a testament to their marketing, well known reputation, dealer coverage and thousands of happy repeat owners. If their products lacked quality or were over priced, they wouldn't sell as many as they do. For every happy Mahindra or Branson owner there are probably 10 happy Deere and Kubota owners. In many cases, having more features, tractor weight, or more lift capacity, is less important than owning a more recognized brand name with a dealer the owner can trust and is geographically convenient. Would I be happy with an E Series Deere or L Series Kubota? Absolutely, they're great machines. It's just that I couldn't justify spending the same money for less features, weight and lift capacities, which to me were all important factors. I feel that I lucked out in my purchase, especially since my dealer is 30 minutes away and is a very established and reputable New Holland dealer, with several locations, and highly focused on customer service. I think everyone on this forum has different factors that are important in the purchase and ownership of a tractor, and that's what makes it so interesting.

What a beautiful tractor -- sorry to hear it was lost in the fire. Classics like that one never go out of style.

My previous tractor was a Kubota L2500 DT 4wd and my current tractor is a John Deere 4310 4wd and my experience with both of them has been great. I can't do an honest comparison between the two tractors other than their dependability because of the vast differences between the two models.

The '96 L2500 was just an incredibly dependable machine. Old school dependable technology. Tractor always started, tough as nails and simple to work on.

My JD 4310 has been a great tractor as well. Only real issue I ever have is the seat safety switch in cold weather. The seat get stiff in the cold temps and the wife doesn't have enough junk in the trunk to depress safety switch to depress the switch.

I will say that JD parts network is pretty intensive. Find the part number and drop it on a search and you will have a multitude of suppliers offering the part so it allows you find the best deal. I have ordered kubota parts and John deere parts and the one thing you can certain with both is that they sure are proud of their replacement parts. Minus maintenance parts like filters and such.

Don't forget CNH. Great availability and ease of ordering. Premium price.

Super, I have looked up some Mahindra parts on their website and the prices are much higher than I expected. In fairness, I haven't requested parts pricing from my dealer, so they may give decent discounts from what the factory lists. As I think about it, this would be a neat new post to start, to see how similar parts prices from different tractor brands compare. Each OEM brand has its own calculations for determining the prices they charge the dealers (I guarantee the OEM profit percentage is well above what the dealer makes). All vehicle manufacturers, including cars, heavy trucks, powersports, tractors and ag equipment, construction equipment, aircraft, etc. use their service parts divisions as a major source of profits -- some more than others. Usually the lower the volume, the higher the cost. The thing to remember is not to be upset with your dealer when he quotes an unreasonable price for a part -- blame the manufacturer's greedy paws.

Don't overlook the Branson dealers in your area. They make a quality tractor and have a simple diesel engine setup. No computer to run the injectors, just a good reliable injector pump. Green and orange paint is expensive.
