I have a JohnDeere 5310 tractor 4 wheel-drive and I changed hyd. oil and filter and pulled out the screene from behind the tractor cleaned and I started to put the screen back in and put my hand inside housing to clean and I got a short piece of metal it looks like a dowl pin about three-eights inch long round just like a wooden dowel pin , I SEARCHED and could not find where it went nor could I FIND ANYMORE what should I do johndeere don't know what it is and wants 3500. dollars just to start, would I be alright to install a magnet at the back where i found the dowel pin and drive it or what ,does anyone have any idea what this could be and where it came from Thanks holt50

If it was me I would do little research on where it came from. Was there a reason other than maintenance that you changed the hydraulic fluid? And how did the pick-up screen look ie was there a lot of metal shavings on it?

I too would try and ID it. Did it appear intact? As in in not broken?
Measure it, diameter and length then you can search JD parts by specifications and get a part number(s). Then determine if that part number(s) was used in your machine.
If you can not find a part number that was used in your machine, it is possible it came from a needle bearing, or more possible it was dropped into the machine during assembly and not retrieved.
