July Fourth Weekend, What Is Your Pleasure ?

My tractor has been in the shop for two weeks waiting on a backordered pressure plate. It's scheduled to be in Tuesday, so IF we have a break in the rain next week I'll probably be bush-hogging, turn my compost, and catch up on grass. And then there are the weeds in the garden... I've got to decide whether to bush-hog the butterbeans or give them a chance.

At my age, I never plan that far ahead. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

The neighboring cowtown hosts a nice tractor show every year on the 4th of July weekend. It is really nice. On the Friday of that weekend I hope to go to an old tractor/equipment auction. On Saturday evening/night walk around a tractor show and watch some fireworks. There is also a tractor pull on Saturday, but I probably won't be able to go. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif Then on Sunday maybe an old tractor parade. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I've been trying to zero-in on the best plan for a couple of years. Two years ago (when my house was in mid-construction) I just had fireworks over our 20-acre lake. Two other property owners also had fireworks, so it was a really big show.

Last year I tried to do it all: cookout, watermelon, fireworks. That ended up being too long in the Texas heat for some of my guests and me too, for sure. By the end of the day I was in a near-coma.

This year I've invited everyone (about 40 folks) to come late in the day for a watermelon feast and then we'll do the fireworks on Saturday, July 3rd. On the 4th, one of my neighbors is having a barbecue, so I'll get to rest up some and go to that. I'm sure there will also be fireworks on the 4th, so our "community" celebration will be over two days. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

We'll be going to two horse shows and 3 or 4 rodeos. Hopefully I'll have most of the second cutting of hay done by then.

We have a large group of friends over for a BBQ and Pickleball. Pickleball is a sport that was invented here in Washington and is really becoming popular. Here is a link: Pickleball It's a great sport that is easy to play for everyone. We have had 70 year old grandmothers and 5 year old kids out on the court playing. We put a court in about 25 years ago and use it often. It takes about 16 yards of concrete, so it isn't a major investment.

So, the day consists of Pickleball, lots of food and the rest of the time protecting our house from our next door neighbors party that results in lots of "friendly fire" /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif artillery coming our way......

I'll be hard at work, making sure that everyone's "worst day of the year" doesn't turn out too bad, after all.

Typically we end up at the in-laws for a cookout. The neices and nephews are all there, and when it comes time for the community fireworks, we can sit in the backyard and watch them from there. Last year, my nephew found out that when I was a kid, we'd climb up on the roof to watch the fireworks. He wants me to do the same thing with him this year! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif I think I'm going to turn this one over to his Dad! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I have Monday off, so I'll be getting ready for the daughter-in-law and grandaughter who will be coming on Tuesday for a 2 week visit! WOOHOO!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Barbeque and fireworks!!

I spend all day smoking brisket and sausage. All the relatives show up about 4 - 5pm so the kids and go fishing in the pond and the adults can begin getting properly lubricated with refreshments.

At dark, we begin the fireworks show. I have a buddy that has one of the largest fireworks stands around. He sells me everything for half price (Which means I can buy twice as much!!). Fortunately they're predicting rain for the rest of the week, so N. Texas shouldn't be a tinder box.

We always try to keep it safe and launch everything back in the pasture. We keep a fire extinguisher, fire blanket and water hose handy.

My wife and I are generally pretty busy come this time of year, but I've gotten the larger chores done ahead of time & our schedules have worked out to leave us the weekend to relax.

We'll probably head to the city fair a few times, but most of the time will be spent on our property. We BBQ at the back of one of our pastures from which we can also shoot skeet and/or pistols at the pile of old tires. The creek is the perfect depth for us to park our lawn chairs in the waters and just swirl your feet around in the water & creek gravel. We're thinking of setting a small table in the creek and lighting off our fireworks from there! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Basically, we'll just try to enjoy our freedoms! Admire & enjoy nature, eat & drink well and exercise our 2nd Ammendment rights. Just about perfect for us. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Jay
