Today I dropped off the head at the machine shop to get checked out. Also dropped off the exhaust to be ceramic coated.

A ceramic coating for the exhaust sounds interesting. I've not encountered it before. Whatever it takes, those old Yanmars are worth getting going again because they last forever.

One of the key maintenance items is to remove and clean the the wire mesh on the cleanable transmission/hydraulic filter. That's a good opportunity to change the old trans/hyd fluid as well. Expect to find that fluid is debased by having some water in it. Rain can seep in past the collar of the shifter.

Also, as it has been sitting outside, you should also check that the gauge in the fuel cap hasn't let water into the fuel tank - best to just drain the tank and fuel filter completely. And also check for water that can leak past the center of the steering wheel and stand in the steering column on top of the steering box.

All these are simple things to deal with, but necessary on these old Yanmars if they sit outside uncovered. A simple tarp thrown over a sitting tractor is sure worth doing.

That V2 loader is a solid indication that tractor has be "refurbished" by this company. They used to sell them as Yanmars, since the lawsuits by Yanmar they now sell them as YNM's. Welcome To Vntractor

was the v2 not OEM? no doubt it was grey market import by one of these companies prior to the lawsuits, but what exactly is meant by"reconditioned". even though i see two different colors of grey, there is no overspray on anything which means it would have had to been taken completely apart and i would not think that to be cost effective.

I am with winston1 on this. That V2 loader is a 100% no doubt Vietnam rebuild tractor. There are all kinds of horror stories on their rebuilds! With one of the most consistent complains being a worn out engine having minimum repairs done, new paint and hour meter set to zero or new installed.
That being said with no doubts in my mind about it, fix it right while you have it torn down. Even being a Vietnam tractor, repair the engine, rebuild the injection pump, drain the oil, fuel and hydraulic fluid, clean or replace the screen, put new fluids in it and it will probably last if cared for through your grandchildren’s lifetime. They are just that solid if taken care of!
My understanding in reading on the tractors in Japan is not a every year trade, but a trade in as the tractor is paid for based on the fee structure.

thanks everyone for entertaining this dialogue. learning quite a bit about an interesting and convoluted history. it would not surprise me if the meter was replaced. come to think if it it probably looks too good for the rest of the machine. the machine shop should be able to tell me how much wear is on the head.

In vietnam, labor is very cheap. They take the tractors down as far as needed to make repairs, and repaint.
They take parts off a donor tractor and install them on the tractor they are rebuilding for resale
If a (piston, etc,) is odd size, it doesn't matter as these workers in viernam will never see this tractor again

They are well known to replace the meter, or roll it back to low hours.
Those of us that have been here a while have seen /heard all the 35 yr old low hour tractor stories, that just don't exist.

Good luck with your tractor repairs. I may sell mine for a much newer tractor very soon

there was once a guy here named Buck ? I believe his company was EFC. He use to post pictures of the factories there with tractors that had been burnt to the ground. These vietnam workers would take this burn up tractor and make it.
Only the worse of the worse went to vietnam for a rebuild, as reputable dealers from the states like Fredricks in Al. only bought the best tractors for resale

looking back, I found an old post from buck about PTO hp

''I know everybody loves the 20% multiplier but that is a guess at best. The FX335 we ran on the dyno came out at 31.1 hp at the PTO. The AF33 without hydrauilic shuttle ran 33.7 at the PTO. Take that tractor home and expect to run a 40hp implement and it will choke.''
