How does a visitor pay toll? We have no toll roads in MO so no transponder, a rental car may or may not have it depending where you rented from. What ya gonna do extradite me?
The license plate capture with invoice sent to the registered owner… for bridge tolls.

Many states put registration holds for unpaid traffic violations in other states.

In the case of rentals it gets matched to the renter at the time and often a handling fee added…

I’ve heard that some rentals have transponders so it’s invoiced at the time and shows up when vehicle returned.

I don’t have a transponder…

Visitors can get in trouble because many freeways have carpool lanes in effect in certain hours and if you don’t have a transponder the CHP is quick to cite… $471.

With transponder you can pay to drive segments of the car pool lane for a fee…

I live here and don’t like it and can only imagine what it’s like for visitors driving the freeways…

The transponder also works for airport parking…

Here, they toll by plate, with a service fee if you dont have a sunpass. The pain with Sunpass, you have to load money on it; so, if you pre load $50; and only use it once, thats $50 gone...

They take a picture of your tag and send you a bill.

I went to NY this spring and didn't have a transponder so had to do it by license plate. I dutifully set up an account with them and waited for an invoice so that I could pass it on to the client. And waited...
I was there from April 27 to May 1. They finally sent me a text on 7/16 telling me my bill was ready. Paying it turned into a cluster because I couldn't log in using any of their methods including via their talking computer. I finally got through to somebody and paid the bill.
Tolls were <$8.00 but I had a couple of hours tied up in it which I refused to pass on to the client. If I go down again I will have an EZ-Pass.

Can't just have a War on the Automobile...... Must Have.... War on Visitors........ cuts down on repeat offenders/visitors !

You have countless beautiful areas in your State. I took a couple of days extra in a business trip, and spent some time driving in NorCal 20+ years ago. Great rural roads (tho, I can see why they get wiped out in mudslides along the coast), and always wanted to get back to them, once I got back into motorcycling.

Today, I'd stick to the desert and remote parts of your State, if I ever make it back. Something like the later part of this vid....

(Again, I apologize OP, for drift.....)

My current PU is a 2020 F350. I could NOT get the dealer to come up with a plain old basic rig. All they would present were PUs full of gadgetry and electric everything to run the price up. All I wanted was a F250, the smaller V8 w/10 speed, cruise and tow package. So I went to Ford's site. Learned the F250 can not be configured with the 6.2 / 10 speed but is available in the F350 / 10 speed (?!?). So I finished the configurator, printed it out and went to the dealer and said order it. They were displeased with me. I picked it up 8 weeks later. The F350 wasn't that much more $ than the F250 for the stronger frame, heavier axles and springs. Rides better than the wife's F250. Both our PUs have manual locks and crank windows. Basic AM/FM. Both PUs have been as reliable as the sun up.
BTW, the wife's PU will be 10 model years old and she has stopped by the dealership and expressed her interest in a new rig. The dealership is playing the same 'ol game coming back with high mark up pickups. But this time she says that she will get a at least power locks and windows. Actually her current rig is just fine but she worked hard in her career field and now retired if she wants a new rig then she gets it.

I probably have the last rig I will ever buy. It's got less than 20k on it. By the way. I did upgrade the tires when I ordered it for the slightly more aggressive than the std all weather 10 plies and it came with Michelin tires. They have performed very good but darn they must be a soft compound as they are almost at the wear indicators at this low mileage. And I don't drive hard - I'm in no hurry these days and drive for mileage. These tires have to be swapped out before winter. This time I'm going for some more aggressive tires like these as I ran them of a previous PU and they did great and wore good too:

I have received many of those mailed bills from driving in Texas and a few from Colorado. CA isn’t the only state that does this.

I’ve wasted a lot of time twice…

Both instances I received a toll violation as this is what they call it… only becomes a real violation if not timely paid.

In both cases the reader misread the plate and assigned the toll to me…

My car was in the garage so no way it could have been me.

I was able to straighten it out because they were able to match my vehicle type and could see the captured image was not the car I own.

Many here alter the plate so that the read is wrong…

For a few of us collectors the old non reflectorized plates may not scan well.

I've waited a week, hoping to read about an accident in the paper and maybe find a picture to post. There must not have been any fatalities which would be a miracle.
On the way home last Sunday I passed the aftermath of what must have been a headon crash. Both full sized pickups were in the ditch on the same side of the highway. One had the entire engine compartment smashed in with the hood and windshield gone, also. (Perhaps because that's how they took the driver out?)
The fact that it never made the news is a miracle. There would have been fatalities with an older vehicle.

Trust a computer to make a simple thing horrendous . . .

Went to a Space-related conference at a fancy hotel in Orlando. You had to register your car for free parking, they had a kiosk in the parking lot.

Here's a dozen or so REAL rocket scientists from NASA, SpaceX, etc. standing around the kiosk trying to figure out how this (bleeping) thing works, with absolutely no success.

I went inside and found some munchkin who worked for the hotel and asked it they could register my plate for me.

No problem - except of course they got it wrong by one extra digit.

Three weeks later I get a nastygram about owing parking, pay or die. Trying to fix this online was a complete waste of time, finally called a person, who called their supervisor, who called THEIR supervisor, etc.

Supervisor says the computer is always right and I owe it. Probably another car like yours with a similar license plate blah blah blah send money.

I asked "Now you tell me, son, what are the chances of an identical car to mine (unusual car), also a convertible, same color, same year, same model, parked next to me at exactly the same day and time, with a unique vanity license plate identical to mine but precisely one digit off? Probably slim to none, ya think?"

Ticket got canceled, and the expo is someplace else next year, where I am sure they'll have their own flavor of computer problems.

Best Regards,
Mike/Florida
