Thanks for spending the time to look up that web site. I'm printing a safety label and mounting it on the BH control lever panel to stop and check all mounting points every startup and at all stoping intervals. SAFETY must come first. I hadn't thought about the mounting points that seriously until now.

Hope to be starting on my barn, all the posts are rotted and the barn is sinking, to dig out and repace the posts next couple of weeks.

WOW - what a motivator. My buddy and I have been building a CADPLANS digger Model 821 for a while now.

We have had a few delays because of my recent eye surgery and over the last year we both took some time off but we are hopeful it will be ready for the spring. Almost all of the fabrication and assembly is done. Now it is final review of all welds, alignment of boom with body, installing hydraulic lines and test driving. After that we will take everything apart and paint it up so it looks as pretty as yours /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Great job - and I hope you had as much fun as we are having.

Bob

Support from CADPLANS has been excellent.

Nice work man! I see you've have this for 2 years now...what are you thoughts now?

Question...what size pin/bolt/whatever is holding the main boom pivot (the pin that allows slew or the side-to-side swing)? Is it just a grade 8 or similar large diameter bolt, or did the kit call to fabricate some sort of pin?

Thx,
Dave

The pins that the boom swings on is a 1" steel rod that goes threw mechanical tubing that I got from metkit. Works great. I grooved it in the center where the zert fitting is and lube it that way. The mechanical tubing acts as a spacer-washer inbetween the sides of the boom. Only slop I got is where I didnt weld the spacer to the housing and it is starting to wear the housing. Simple fix, just clean the grease off and weld the spacer to the housing.

To hold the pin in place, Just weld a tab to the end of the pin (1") and bolt to the housing so that the pin wont turn.

Hey fella:

Nice job. Which model is this, and how much does it weigh?

Just curious here...everyone says that 3pt backhoes with no sub-frame mounts can be dangerous in terms of crushing the operator if the 3pt lift arms or something supporting the hoe breaks. I can see how this might be the case. Have you thought about adding something that bolts or pins to the frame in addition to the 3PH? It seems like it would be pretty slick to hook the hoe to the 3PH, lift it into position w/ the 3PH, then pin it to the frame. I guess with this particular model, that might not work as well since it has manual stabilizers rather than hydraulic stabilizers though...

I always wonder how much benefit cutting the complicated shapes for the flat plates and constructing a boom with the bend in the middle really is. It sure seems like it'd be much less fabrication involved to just use a straight boom (the Power-trac backhoe attachments use straight booms...I'm sure there are others). Less fabrication involved in just using rectangular plate rather than cutting complicated shapes in the plate as well. I realize that with a straight boom, you lose some downward reach and you can't curl it up quite as tight for transport...any other drawbacks come to mind? Any drawbacks to just using rectangular plates rather some of the more complicated shapes most of these designs call for?

I guess it ain't as pretty without some of the fancier shapes, but then we ain't buildin' about a piano... /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Hey ya'll!!! The backhoe weighs about 500 lbs and within the next six months I'm going to build a subframe and hydraulic outriggers for my cadplans 608 model. I wish I would have done it when I bought the kit, but John at cadplans talked me out of it. It really seams to put a strain on the tractor and I'm extremely careful until I build them.

I have finished most of my projects at this house, but we are moving in a few months to our retirement home and there are already plenty of projects to do there and lots of paybacks to some of my new neighbors.

The bent boom does work for me a lot real good and I would buy it again. The Thumb I wouldn't get again because the boom doesnt have enough power to lift very much. The joy sticks work VERY well for me because I can't walk and chew gum at the same time.

I'm chomping at the bits to get the subframe and new outriggers built but some other items have to come first.

I just bought a rear scraper blade and practicing with it just to get more seat time. Hard to keep me off my tractor!

Very nice work you did there. It's always nice to see someone with talent to built things like that. Someday I'll get me a backhoe too.

Hi

Great backhoe!! I have been considering building the 808 model for my JD990. I figured I would build a set of frame mount brackets and get the hydraulic stabilizers.

Did you buy the complete kit or did you fab the parts yourself locally ? Do you recommend the superboom option ?

Thanks
John

I bought the whole kit because I didn't have the time to cut out all the parts. I'm not very fast at fabricating parts, more time figuring out than actually doing, and all I had was a shop saw and a cutting torch with small tanks. If I had more time, I would have bought all the necessary tools to fab the parts myself and would probably have cost me the same but I woud have the extra tools now.

As for as the super boom, I'm glad I got it and I'm guessing that since mine is the little backhoe, it is more necessary than one on a larger machine. If I had gotten a larger backhoe, I probably would still go with the superboom.

( I just finished building a small backhoe from cadplans and wanted to show finished product. Only took 5 months to complete. By the way, it works great!!!!!!!!

There is a danger of getting crushed between the BH and the ROPS because the ROPS is not tall enough on this setup.
