When I bought my MS250 they sold me a Stihl sharpening kit with it. It’s a small flat file for the rakers, a round file with a guide and a gauge. The gauge I use for the rakers only. You set it on the chain and there is a place you can see if the raker is sticking up above the flat part of the gauge, they need filed. For me they rarely need it, maybe after 5 to 10 tanks of fuel.

I have an Oregon 505 electric chain sharpener with a diaomond wheel. I bought it used from the local Stihl dealer years ago. I no longer use it.

I use this instead:

About $40 from Bailey's: Pferd CS-X Chain Sharp Filing Guides

Easy to use, very effective and no driving +20 miles to have a chain sharpened.

I also use the still 2 in 1 similar to that pictured. Anybody know where you get replacement files? The lady sold me one that she assured me would fit.....not!

Bailey's sells them. They list a depth gauge file specifically for the Pferd Chain Sharp CS-X, which is identical to the Stihl 2-in-1 systems (Pferd makes the 2-in-1 for Stihl.) Make sure to order the one for the Pferd CS-X system, since Bailey's also sells replacement files for an older Pferd system as well. I believe the part you want is Bailey's SKU #17310.

For the round files, I would contact Bailey's to make sure you are getting the correct file to fit. I was always under the impression that they were just the ordinary Pferd round files (which Bailey's sells). I also thought other brands of round files fit as well, but I'm not positive. It's worth touching base with them before you order. I usually buy my files by the 6 pack (or 12 pack if i find a good deal). I store them in the packaging to help protect the file teeth from damage in my box of chainsaw tools (an old ammo can). Another good spare file protector: the plastic straws that fast food places include with their drinks. Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry. I would generally squeeze one end shut with some pliers and melt the end closed .(Most of them are switching to cardboard straws now. If you can get them clean, they would work as well.)

Frankenkubota - I'm surprised the place you bought the Stihl 2-in-1 from does not have spare files. They are a consumable item. The sharpener isn't much good without good files.

You are right! I致e used chain saws my whole life, maybe 1/year. I致e put 500? hours on this summer and still learning about sharp chains, like any tool, how to sharpen etc. etc

Sharpen often. Just like wall paper.

I致e looked at thousands and thousands (millions?) of machined parts so finishes etc are not a problem.

I did buy a file from the store they said would fit, but it didn稚.

I think The guy that buys new chains has it figured out.

Another good file holder similar to drinking straws is a piece of plastic fuel line... or in my case a used piece of maple sap tubing.
