guys thanks so much for the kind words and for all your help- Am arranging shipping now- This is going to be a surprise gift for my Dad who just turned 80- He has been using a 1983 L275 but just cant shift anymore-
So I need more advice - I want to get a brush hog and a finish mower to do about 3-5 acres- what is the right size for this tractor and whos make should I get- thanks again!!!

That's great to hear; agree with Grandad4, you are a good son, I imagine your dad had a lot to do with that. I use a Land Pride RCR2672 on ours as I cut everything from grass to heavy brush, you can go with a lighter cutter if you won't be doing brush. I agree with TomSeller on brands and would add Woods. I no longer use our finish mower, but used a 7' and 8' in the past and either will work depending on your terrain and obstacles or lack thereof.

If you have a rear remote, I would recommend getting a hydraulic top link as it makes hook up easier as well as adjustment for transport and such.

Maintenance on these things are really easy and we do all our own: Kubota L-40 Series Service

Someone recently posted how they had modified the step to make access to the operator's platform easier, so that may be an option at some point. I have to use a step stool to get in mine and am looking at other options.

There are quite a few L52/5740 along with other GL owners who can help you and your father if you have any specific questions on operation once you get it.

:thumbsup:Yes Congrats, the Grand L's are a real nice tractor, I just love the HST Plus for loader work. I have the 3540 and run a Woods 72" rear finish mower with ease so Triple R is correct that you could go to a 7' or 8'. I also use the hydraulic top link it is so much easer to hook up and make adjustment on the fly. Best of luck to you and your Dad.

guys thanks for the kind words- my dad is the best!! he was talking about a new tractor and was looking at the bigger 80 hp series but i think for what we are using it for it would have been way to much tractor= plus his legs are shot so i think this will be easier to handle-

Congrats on the new tractor! I have a 5240 with about 240 hours on it now and have loved every minute of it. The hst+ takes a little while to get a full understanding/appreciation but it is a great tranny that I would not give up. Like tripleR said there are a lot of owners here so ask whatever questions you have.

Have a 5240 myself very wise choice. Have three remotes myself Kubota made like TripleR. Brian who frequents this site sells them as well and fellow members on this site speak highly of him. For a bush hog think you should stay in the six foot size as it will cover your tracks. Again great choice and your father has a fantastic son. Good luck!

Christmas in September! Congrats on your tractor and boy will your Dad be proud of you for taking the time to do this.
As a 5740 owner, one suggestion I'd add is to have someone help him with putting fuel in. It's a big lift for a diesel can up to the top fill, unless you have a pump arrangement. Now the latter might be a great add on gift...xmas is coming...

With few exceptions, he can put that tractor on "automatic" with all the electronics working and just press on the pedal.
And please, don't lift very much with that FEL until you have some serious weight on back, a ballast box, filled tires, a mower, whatever, the tractor is light in the rear bone stock for its capability to lift in the front.

Otherwise, your Dad will still be grinning when he goes to sleep at night! :thumbsup:

Pretty much agree, we also have an M8540HDC and it is surely a nice tractor, but while your dad may not have any problems with it now, in the future he may. It is a pretty good climb getting into it and a slip on the 5740 won't be a big deal while one with the M8540 might be. And of course you have the shifting and such, not a big deal now, but I believe the L5740 will keep him active longer and give everyone else more peace of mind. He will also be able to do more of his own maintenance which may be important for him. My son does all the maintenance on our M8540, more than I can handle any longer.

As to rear remotes, I went with factory. MtnViewRanch (Brian) sells remotes and I bought a hydraulic top link from him for our M8540 usually recommends factory rear remotes for a cleaner looking installation on the Kubota, but check with him. If you are mechanically inclined, you can do your own installation, it was beyond my ability, so I had my dealer include it in the new build. Brian's top links and side links are as good as factory Kubota, so you might want to go that route in conjunction with the OEM remotes themselves.
