Just saw my first $80,000 lawnmower

I saw a zero-turn and iirc it had a 104" cut. It would cut a football field in 10 minutes. 30K iirc.

But...why?

One would have to have some accounts that would justify dedicating that much money to a unit that does one thing.
Those accounts are probably federal government accounts, which you and I are paying...

It's an Exmark Lazer Z 37hp diesel. No fancy cab with AC. Looks more or less like any other zero-turn I've seen.

I'm hoping someone who knows more about these things can answer a question for me. Is there ever an actual business case to be made for a mower that costs as much as my 75hp tractor? I just can't make sense of it.
You can invest in the top of the line or you can pay taxes on your company's profits or you can give your employees a raise? Guess which decision 'Big Business' CEO would make?

Well 0% saves some money I guess, but you better read the fine print, LOL

But regardless, that wasn't my point. My point is people keep buying and buying stuff they really can't afford and that why we now have $50,000 atv's and $125,000 pickup trucks and the manufacturers are laughing all the way to the bank and raising prices by the year.
Capitalism - Big Business sets the price. Consumer pays the price. Consumer doesn't pay the inflated price and Big Business can't eat their product so they lower the price or discontinue their product.
Who really controls prices in the long run?

Something for everyone to consider is putting a finish mower on your compact diesel tractor. My Kubota B2601 has a Landpride 72" cut finish mower and I love it! My friend thinks I am crazy for not using the Mid-Mount Mower.

Me, I can cut under trees without dragging branches across my face. I can cut close to fences without scrubbing my tires on them. I can back up to my pond to cut the grass to the waters edge, or a little farther if I want so fishing is nicer. I also can mow his cabin in about half the time he does with his Kubota MMM too!

A zero-turn mower would be nice around my flag pole and a few birdhouse poles but, I am really happy with my little tractor and its rear-mount finish mower.

YOLO and the Fear of Missing Out are real for many consumers. This has led to bad financial decisions on many fronts.

Abusive auto dealership and farm implement pricing at dealers for a start. Used car and farm equipment dealers during the COVID lockdowns seemed like drug dealers to me.

Kubota lost me during COVID for abusive and unrealistic pricing. Of course they didn't care with people buying over-priced ranch'ettes that were convinced they needed a 40HP tractor and implements to maintain a 2-acre "estate" to the tune of $40K~$60K.

Not dis-similar to the lady that traded in her Jeep 4-door Rubicon. She was all excited to get a new Ford Bronco for only $20K over the MSRP sticker price! How many years or decades will it take to get right-side up on that "deal"? I believe in Free Will and that you can't protect everyone from their own bad decisions but, dealers that enable and fuel obviously bad transactions should be shunned at a minimum!

I see it only comes with a Kawasaki gas guzzling motor. Needs a diesel. Main reason why I traded mine in for the Kubota diesel front mount was the gas guzzling Kawasaki. 5 gallons of gas per mow wasn't a cheap date...
I'm wondering how many mowings you'd need to make to pay off the difference in a diesel versus gasser mower. Anyone care to take a stab at it? Mileage is better, but diesel isn't exactly free, either. I mow 3-4 acres every 3 - 5 days, and I don't think I could manage to rack up enough in fuel savings to offset the higher price of the diesel, I'm guessing only a commercial outfit is going to be able to make those numbers work.

As to maintenance, I've owned my mower almost 20 years, and have not had a single expense related to the engine, other than yearly oil and filter.

I have one. Paid $3400 from the local annual Metro-Park agency auction with 2500 hrs. Had a hose clamp loose on one of the wheel motors so it dripped a teeny tiny amount of oil in left turns. County government at it's finest...

As I mentioned in another post in this thread, I bought a 72" ExMark diesel zero-turn at an auction. Kubota motor. I also bought a gas powered 72" Toro at the same auction, which is essentially the same machine. ExMark now owns Toro (or the other way around, whatever). 2:1 fuel rate usage gas vs. diesel. Plus I can buy "off road" non-taxed diesel for much less than taxed gasoline here. My Toro is for sale ! Needed a couple of new gauge wheels and blades.

THIS. Multiplicities buy this equipment, abuse it for 2-3000 hrs then it shows up on the auction sites. Probably if they keep it longer they loose funding.
