Have a few questions about the cooling system on the 51 8N.
Since I bought this tractor without knowing when any of the fluids had been changed,I decided to go through them all from front to back.
Changed oil and filter and have excellent oil pressure even when machine is hot. :)
Moved on to the radiator. Figured I would drain the radiator, flush with the garden hose through the drain, refill with fresh antifreeze, and be done.
Well, filled the radiator and it only took like a gallon and a half to reach the top within an inch for expansion.
Started the tractor to circulate the coolant than eventually add more as the level dropped.
The level never dropped past the initial filling of the radiator.
The top hose gets hot to the touch from the radiator all the way to the back after running a few minutes, but here is the issue.
The bottom hose never heated up and I was able to squees it with my hand so there is no coolant in the bottom hose.
Now I was thinking that there must be a blockage down low somewhere so I drained the radiator again, took the hose off the engine side, and used the garden hose and ran water through the radiator and out the end of the radiator hose into the bucket with no issues. Came out fast and hard.
What is up or what am I doing (or not doing) that could be wrong?
And just alittle side note... If this gets into anything to deep as far as pump removal or something like that I will have to put the bottom hose back on,refill with what antifreez it will except and let it sit. Reason being is I am legally blind with about 30% sight left so alot of the things I do are through touch (and a very understanding wife and daughter who try to help). So anything beyond what I have done wont happen unless it's an easy fix. All my so called "tools" fit in a 18"x12"x12" box and what takes you guys 20 minutes to do takes me over an hour.
And yes,I was going to spend the money to have a shop do the mainenance and go through it and hopefully solve some issues, but he told me flat out "I don't want any part of it".
Well, theres my issues in a nut shell. Feel free to chime in with any comments about the cooling issues,or my "popcorn popping" from a diferent thread(I tried to adjust the carb to no avail) or just jump in and tell me how much of an idiot I am for even having this thing. Love old iron, grew up with an 8N and had to have one and be one of the cool kids.
Thanks everyone for reading my long winded post.

Just a quick question, Do you have a functioning temp gauge on the 8n. Im not positive on what the thermostat should run at on an 8n but on my oliver of similar engine size and year runs at about 180 deg. Until it gets up to that temperature the thermostat will restrict the flow of coolant. Your water pump is only going to allow as much water in through the block as how much your thermostat will allow.

If you flushed the radiator twice and water is flowing out as fast as your putting it in it definitely is not a block in the rad. Heat in the return hose to Rad would should say the pump is working fine. Thermostat could be stuck closed but I have never had one go faulty in the closed position. Plus if it was faulty in the closed the position your temp gauge should ping up over 220 in no time flat.

Just out of curiosity what is the operating temp when the engine is warm?

Check thermostat in top radiator hose. When you drained the radiator did you also drain the engine block, petcock on the side of block?

Kirk,I just drained the radiator and nothing else.
I was going to pull off the top hose and check/replace the thermostat but I am unable to get to the top radiator hose clamp due to space restrictions.

Wait for soundguy to chime in. He knows his 8N stuff. You might want to send him a PM to chime in to help.

The thermostat on an 8n is in the too radiator hose, sounds like the thermostat could be stuck and not allowing water to circulate, also the impeller on the pump could have rotted or could be just slipping on the bearing shaft

1, no temp gauge onthe N oem. but 160-180' thermostats are common.

2, as has beenmentioned. thermo is int he top hose. I'd repalce it.

I'd also backflusht he block and rad and see what comes out. IE.. make sure if you put water in the top of the rad it comes out the bottom.

lastly. you can do a cheapy test on the water pump impellor by slipping top hose off head, pinch off hose, open rad cap and crank tractor.. water should move out of the head ....

With my wifes help we removed the hood today. Was not an easy process as she is not that strong and having to work around the loader made matters even worse.
When it goes back on I will have to recruite some stronger help but I truly appreciate all she helps me with. 20 years and going strong!
Anyways, here are a few pics of what I am dealing with as far as the radiator goes. The two questions are..Take this one in and have it rebuilt or just order a new one and save the hassle of running around getting this one in shape?
Secondly, what is my next step in determining the status of the cooling system?
I have ordered the upper and lower hoses and T stat from Just8Ns and I will either have a new or rebuilt radiator soon so what is next?

almost looks like someone jb welded the overflow on. if it is instead a bad solder job.. I'd just clean it up and resolder it.

it only functions when she is venting anyway.

plumbers soldering kit will do it.

Thanks Soundguy and everyone else.
I am either going to have this radiator repaired or replaced with a new one since I have taken the time and effort to pull the hood off I want to get the cooling system in 100% shape.
I don't mind putting the bucks into the machine since it has alot going for it.
Steering is tight
All the lights work
Excellent oil pressure even when hot
Brakes work to good..need to be adjusted
Loader operates great off the hydraulics
No weird sounds other than the "popcorn popping" from the exhaust but the motor runs smooth
Tin is perfect with excellent paint altho not the correct Ford gray
No leaky axle seals
Starts on first or second crank
So,after I put some money into the cooling system and a few other odds and ends I should end up with a decent machine.
What is the proper procedure for flushing the block with the tractor in this stage of tear down?
