No need to leave the thread Soundguy. "Testing" the pump is kind of a vague statement and if simple household items can be used to do that I am all for it.
If ANYONE has detailed instructions on how to test the pump let me know.
Can this test be done with the way the tractor sits now IE no tank or fuel to the carb,etc.

quit crossing your finger and jst test the pump. It sucks from the low hose, discharges thru the top hose... should be pretty easy to rig up a feed and see if it moves water.

So, in the state it is in now, try putting some water in pail. Hook up a hose to the pump (use rad hose you have off) and hold at same level as inlet on pump. Crank over tractor. If water goes down in the bucket and out the head, impeller/pump working.

You have to get the water level about the same level as the pump or higher (imagine relationship of water to pump when in the radiator). The pump won't "suck" it up like a water pump on a outboard. The water pump just circulates it.

It would be easiest to test with the radiator on.

$10 say a pump is fine. New radiator, cap and stat should get you going fine.
