KAMA TS254 Reverse problem

   / KAMA TS254 Reverse problem #11
One thing I have learned in more than 4 years dealing with these tractors is nothing is definate, but there SHOULD be, in a hole in line with each shift rail, a ball with a spring on top and usually a dowl that acts as a spacer.

I was able to raise the steering out of the way and remove the screws on the top of the trans housing as you described. I got the spring out, but not the ball because i couldn't get in there. There was not spacer I couild determine or get the ball out. Do the balls wear out, or the spacers? Do I need to pull the steering all the way out to actually see into the holes?

Still get it to stay in reverse sometimes, but oddly enough it seems that when the front end is elevates it falls out of reverse more often, but when backing up a hill it rarely pops out?????

You should feel a slight click and some resistance to moveing the lever out of forward and reverse if the ball is there. If it is missing, it will not lock in either position. More than likely, the rails is not being moved quite enough to make it to the detent position. A small magnetic screwdriver or pick you might be able to fish the ball out of the hole, just to confirm its presence.

Well, I'm not having much luck. Looking inside, Nothing appears broken, the ball is in there and it does click into gear. Spring's OK, etc. I still have it dropping reverse at times especially if I back down a slope. It never seems do do it if I back up a slope.

Try to find a stiffer (slightly) spring OR increase the length of the spacer pin. this will increase the tension on the detent ball. You could also have a slightly bent shift fork for the forward/reverse gear. if it is not fully engaging the gears, there could be more axial thrust generated by the gears running partially engaged, this would explain why it comes out of reverse and not out of forward. If that still doesn't get it there could be a missing snap ring on one of the shafts in the "mid connecting housing" which is the front compartment of the transmission. this would allow the reverse idler gear to slide around on its shaft. dropping out of gear on hills is not good and so you really need this to be fixed.

Is pulling this part of the tranny as FUN as splitting it in half like I did when I put the clutch in las year? Do you think it's doable in a day?

Yes it is just as fun, but first you need to find out if there is a reason to do it. with the transmission fully clicked into reverse and with the oil drained down where you can see, look for misalligned or damaged gears. you may be able to use a long screwdriver to see if the reverse gears can be shifted out of place. A bent shift fork might partially engage reverse, but we are sort of grasping at straws here... Another question. when this happens, does the shuttle shift lever move? to re-engage reverse do you have to pull it out of reverse then back in or just push it back in? this will tell us if the detent is holding position and something else is moving or is the detent just not strong enough to hold.

The shift lever doesn't move, to get back into reverse I shift back to forward and it usually goes back in revers. Sometimes it is hard to get into forward at this point and I have to work it pretty hard.

I looked over there, and saw was 3rrl's reference to his shuttle shift. Is that the one you're referring to?
