If you staple the wire on the inside of the perimeter posts the cattle won't be as likely to push the staples out. Trees at convenient places in the pasture will provide shade and something for the cattle to scratch on. To tighten fences I want a Texas Fence Fixer Texas Fence Fixer | LivestockShed.com - YouTube It looks good in the video. I also want to know how the guy in the video carries barbed wire in his pocket without dropping it or getting stuck.

When I worked on a farm with cattle, fencing was a constant job.

Cattle would just run through a fence if they wanted too. Pretty sure a neighbors dog was chasing the cattle and if we had caught it... Three S time. Barbed wire was just a mere hindrance to the cattle. Sometimes the grass was just greener and a few would go through the fence. Sometimes that dog would chase them through a fence. Sometimes they would spook themselves and off they would go. Skittish critters they were....

Tree and limbs on the fences required repairs.

Cattle using the barbed wire as a back/side scratcher required mending.

Heating/cooling cycles certainly affect my HT fence. Amazing to see what was tight, loosen up as the temp changes.

We had a 8-12 inch wide fence tightner on the farm. The tool would open up to fit over the fence and would crimp the wire which did a good job of tightening the wire. It might take a few crimps to get the tension back but it was fast and easy to do.

This is a variation on using spring tighteners.

I used lengths of single strand polymer wire similar to this:

Finish Line High Tensile Polymer Fencing | Finish Line Fence

to make the deadends. I attached a length of polymer to the post, fed it through a loop on the end of the steel wire, and pulled it back on itself and clamped it with a small "U" clamp. The polymer wire is strong and stretches a lot. It is sort of like a very heavy classical guitar string. I never had a problem with slack wire after that.

I came up with this solution after trying to use only polymer wire as a safe fence for horses. It was safe but stretched so much that my horse would lie on it and stretch it a good 15' to eat in the neighbour's field. So I salvaged the polymer wire and replaced it with salvaged powerline 3-strand smooth steel wire (3/13 wire).

That is the type tool I mentioned. I haven't been able to find one.

Dan,
I think I saw an ad for the one pictured in Farm Show decades ago. I didn't think it would be very effective because when I used to crimp slack wire with a claw hammer, the crimps mostly straightened back out. Your enthusiasm for the crimper makes me think I might have been mistaken. I attempted to contact the lady who writes the blog and ask her where her husband got his. If I find out,, I'll pipe up.

I had the same problem on same kind of fence. Bought a crimper that looks just like bolt cutters and sleeves. About halfway the fence I cut a wire, slid a sleeve on, stuck the other wire in the sleeve, pull tight with fence mender, and crimp the sleeve 3 or 4 times. So far still looks good.
