kerosene in lieu of diesel

/ kerosene in lieu of diesel #61
This is an old thread. I use to work at a Massey Ferguson dealership. All new tractors came to us with about 3 gallons of kerosene in the tanks, instead of diesel. Kerosene burns cleaner than diesel and the engines start faster. Kerosene is #1 Fuel oil, and diesel is #2 Fuel oil. Don't know if this info is somewhere in the thread.

Here in Eastern PA, the Kerosene I get is dyed red - and yes, it is a Kerosene pump and not ORD. I use about 20 gallons a winter in my Kerosun and use the clear handpump to pump from the fuel can to the heater. The handpump is permanently stained a deep translucent pink.

I sold my 84 Ford diesel to a friend. It was his first diesel. Being in California he soon got spoiled by the diesel pumps being marked in green trim for easy ID. Well on vacation pulling his camping trailer he got gasoline out of a green pump. He shut it off as soon as he noticed (smell mostly) and had to finish the trip on the front tank (19.5 gal) as the rear (45 gal aftermarket tank) was contaminated. Disposal in California is a BIG DEAL. I gave him the plastic fuel tank out of my 1997 Dodge Ram 3500 as I had replaced it with a larger aftermarket tank.

He drained the tank on the '84 into the plastic tank to store it till we could use it up as additive for weed killing, fire starting assist liquid, parts cleaner, and such. A shady neighbor of his across the street from him was in the process of moving away and low and behold when they left the Ryder rental truck and the bozo's personal diesel truck pulling a trailer (diesel powered truck also) were both acting very strangely, sounding rough, and apparently not producing proper power. My buddy thought that it was quite a coincidence that both trucks would be acting so weird when the previous day both were OK.

The next day the answer was obvious. The plastic tank was GONE. Apparently the bozo stole it and used the fuel. I didn't really need the tank so no harm no foul (to me) but my bud and I thought gee, what comeuppance! There wasn't THAT much gasoline in the diesel and those trucks were suffering mightily. A clear demonstration of gasoline in the diesel tank.

I have another buddy who has an Army surplus deuce and a half (Hogan's Heroes type truck) with a multifuel engine that is diesel and burns diesel, jet fuel, av gas (not the very highest octane though) low lead, high test, and on and on with no adjustments. You must pour it in the tank and the engine runs on it if it is on the approved list (quite a list.) Apparently Ryder trucks aren't that way. (he he he)

I know this is an old thread................... but I'm hoping a couple of our fuel experts can help me.

I have a friend who is moving. He has a kerosene heater in his garage with about a hundred gallons in the tank. He said I could have the kero if I can pump it out, since it would just be left for the new homeowners. If you were going to burn it in your modern tractor, what would you add to it to add lubricity....... and at what ratio? I'm hoping to add a lubricant, as opposed to mixing in another hundred gallons (or more) of no.2. I always keep some power service (white bottle) on hand, but if that is what you'd use..... what ratio would you mix at?

It's a bad idea to run Kero in your tractor.

Winter blended fuel is often up to about 1/2 kerosene and 1/2 #2 diesel. It doesn't gel till it gets much colder than straight diesel. It does provide a little less power.

I would be leery of running that much pure kerosene. If you can't store it till you use it at a safe dilution rate then it may not be a bargain. Free fuel? Not if it causes issues with your tractor.

Well lets see...5 gallon cans run around $10 here...so $2 a gallon to store free fuel then you got a bunch of cans left for eternity:D

I'd run it for sure if clean and no water, not full ratio but mixed in. Back when diesel was so high, approaching $5 a gallon I ran a bunch in my 4 diesels, that I bought for less than half of what diesel was priced for at the time;)

An old timer's mix for really cold winter is 50kero/50diesel for easier starting and no waxing of diesel. since now a days we have these ultra low sulfur feuls - it seems we have a bigger lubricity to worry about so mixing with kero will cause lubricity concerns from what i heard.
