I went up north last weekend to go see the Huskies get beat in the 3rd period, took the sled from my friend's place near Bergland up to Houghton for the game. It's about a 75 mile trip, the trails were in nice shape considering how much traffic was on them. Over 200" so far this season in the Keweenaw from what I hear.
Saturday night was clear and cold, it got down to -23°F. The moonlight was very bright, so I tried to take a photo with my phone:
Went over to my land Sunday afternoon to change trail camera batteries. This photo was taken on an old skidder road I opened up last summer, the snow was around 3 feet deep here in the woods.
And here is a photo from the old logging road through my land that the neighbors groom and maintain as a skiing trail. You can see my sled is sitting a lot higher on the snow!
I managed to get my sled stuck turning around in a small meadow, and when I hopped off the snow was above my waist, so it was about 3-1/2 feet deep. Soft, fluffy powder... I got my sled wiggled around, hopped back on, and with a blip of the throttle it popped right out.
Unfortunately, the tracks on the groomer vehicle crushed a grouse that was roosting for the night under the snow. It will make some coyote, wolf, or bobcat very happy though.
My road is an all season maintained one, but because it's a dead end road it doesn't get plowed as a priority. And you can see why they don't rush to get the road plowed, because it had snowed about a foot two days before I was here, and there were no tracks on the road. No traffic, no rush to plow...
