Here is a conveyor link we found in the water at the Freda stamp mill. We had no idea what it was for the longest time but a mining engineer buddy was over on night and immediately recognized it. He said they broke all the time and the guys would replace them and throw the bad one over the side. Its suppose to gave holes in it to make it into link but the lake must had worn them off.

Here is a few photos taken today on a ski we did to see the falls on the Baltimore river. This would be the O kun de kun falls. The snow was rather shallow there and less than we get here. This is close to the edge of lake snow area and we're getting close to spring anyway. With low snow, we cut our ski short. The river was up from the warmer temps which promoted us to ski in and see them. The river is brown from clay but most up here are clear, or slightly brown from tannin.

All your snow makes me shiver. All the dogs have their blankets on. We saw a river that looked like pancake batter - going back to Nebraska - years ago. Too wet to plow - to thick to drink. We were doing so well here. The grass was really green - the yard was full of buttercups - and then yesterday afternoon and evening. It snowed, it blew, it turned cold. It was 17F this morning. It's 24F right now - in the "heat" of the day.

However - the weather forecast is for low 50's this coming week.

I see you have Pileated Woodpeckers too. It's amazing how fast they can make holes like that and how they know where the carpenter ants are.

We do have Pileated Woodpeckers but we thought those holes being so small might be made by a species that was smaller, maybe a hairy? Living in the northern hardwoods, we see Pileated on a regular bases and there holes. What an strange animal to see and hear in the woods!

We read the same thing. But how do they they find the trees with carpenter ants? Smell? Sound? We've been under trees and had them drumming not 30ft up. Seems like they are talking to the chicks or there mates. We'd seem them going through the woods and have one juvenile with them. The sounds they make, makes me think we are listening to dinosaurs. What a strange animal. They remove wood from old trees like its a large wood chisel. More trail adventure photos can be seen on our dogs blog.

Arly, I take your photos as the winter we did not have being an XC skier myself.
We only had 4 snowstorms of any consequence and all of them melted or rained off in a week. Spring at least is 3 weeks early.
Enjoy that snow it while you still can.
